4.4SDV8 vibration at 1300rpm

I know these threads are generally impossible to help with, but on the off chance - I'm trying to diagnose a strange vibration at 1300rpm. These are facts:

- Can be heard in the cabin pretty clearly
- Unrelated to steering angle
- Happens in all gears and at all speeds
- Much louder with the window open, and sounds a touch metallic
- Does not happen when in neutral/idling the car
- Don't think it happens in reverse (I will double check this)
- Haven't checked lo ratio gearbox (I will also check this)
- Not audible below or above about 1300rpm

It's been into the garage and they haven't found anything obvious, and now want to do a road test with NVH gear to narrow down the cause.

It's had front and rear transfer oil changes about 9 months ago.

Given it seems very tightly aligned to the engine RPM and not speed, I am thinking tyres can be safely ruled out.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Can you 'feel' the vibration or is it just a noise?

Can't be felt through the steering wheel.

You do kind of "feel" it in the trim of the car though, the whole thing resonates.

I just picked it up from the garage, they reckon it's possibly a bit of loose heat sheilding that they cannot access without tearing off a load of other trim.

I tried low range but the noise of the gearbox is that much louder that it pretty much overruns it. Will try reverse in a empty car park later tonight.

I’ve just looked into what sounds very similar to yours on my brother in law’s sport which has the 4.4 SDV8.
Turned out to be the heat shield above the the DPF filter that had worked loose at the front weld. A large jubilee clip round it has done the trick and he reports its like a different car to drive now right through the rev range.

Hi, remove under car bash plate and there is a heat shield above the catalytic convertor it will be cracked.
this heat shield is made out of very thin sheet metal. It is held on by 6 little bolts and would take you about 1/5 an hour to replace the shield, that includes jacking the car up removing bash plate and old heat shield and putting all back together.
the shield in Australia costs $100.
Hope that helps.

Hi, check out the thread below see if your experiencing the same issue, I'm still trying to figure it out, are you getting the vibration only in gear or under any circumstance around 1300rpm?

We find the most common issue is the heat shield under the gearbox sump... The H shaped steel bracket crack fractures leading to the dreaded resonance!!!

Good luck Thumbs Up

It was indeed the heat sheild under the gearbox!
