One of my air springs developed a fault so I have changed both the front ones for Aerosus units. Dampers are fine.

I was very diligent in looking at the workshop manual and assembling the strut/spring however they are both leaking and the car is settling at the front overnight.

Here's a video of the assembly, the only thing I noticed that was different about these from the old ones was the number of spacers at the top of the damper. On the old unit there were two O rings and 2 spacers. On the replacement there were two O rings and three spacers.

I have asked Aerosus for comment.



Anyone got any thoughts? Christian.

When I was looking at changing mine I change the whole assemblies as there are replies by multiple people across various forums saying that they can be a sod to get new airbags to seal on the existing struts.

Hopefully Aerosus will get back to you with a trick to get them to seal.

I considered that but as the old dampers are fine and with the active damping are horrendously expensive, I just went with bags.

I haven't seen any threads about them being a to seal or I may have paid more consideration to changing them both.

They seem great quality actually, the car literally shoots up at the front now, the adjustment is almost instantaneous, just a shame they are clearly leaking.

Finding the leak is going to be next to impossible as I have no way to keep the bag inflated whilst submerging it in water. Christian.

I had my front bags changed aerosus, top seals sequence should be, back up ring (white nylon) rubber o ring, back up ring, rubber o ring, back up ring.

One bag failed on inflation, refunded ok by aerosus, luckily it wasn't the side that the original failed on.

I too have a very small leak and I think its at the top seal assembly, its diminished over time, possibly the seals expanded, not too worried to do something about it as it takes a few days of no use to be noticeable and the car pumps up fine in a minute or two, but if I was to rebuild the assembly again I would use a smearing of bathroom silicone sealant on the bottom large o rings, the top o rings and the final fitting on the top of the assembly

I fitted the top seals in the order you mentioned and also gave them a smother of silicone grease which aids assembly and also prolongs their life, it did strike me as off there are three spacers though as the originals only have two.

When I cut open the old airbag and had a look at the top seal assembly there is not enough space to accomodate a third spacer. Christian.

Sam's Motor & Machine on YouTube had problems with leaking Aerosus airbags that he fitted to the rear that he ended up changing out for a different make so am just curious to see if Aerosus can offer a resolution to make theirs seal.

Aerosus asked me to do a soap test by which I guess they mean spray it with soapy water to identify the leak.

I have told them that is entirely impractical as anywere the leak would actually occur is shrouded, the the bottom by the platform upon which the airbag rests and at the top by the suspension turret itself.

I have made a test rig to inflate the strut off the car so I'll get it off and inflate the thing, then submerge it in the pool to try and identfy the leak. Then I'll report back to them and here.

I'm off on holiday for two weeks however so it will need to be when I return! Christian.

Today I have removed the air strut from the car and submerged it in a water bath to check for leaks.

This video is my findings.



It looks like it's leaking from within the swivel unit at the top of the airbag as that is where the air seems to be escaping from, just adjacent to the air inlet. Christian.

Is the nut tight?
I had to have a second go at tightening mine when I replaced just the bags.

Are you using a hex socket or similar to hold the shaft? I was surprised how tight mine needed to be to stop bubbles emanating from around the nut, which might indicate a different problem.
