Reduced performance DPF filter full.

Hi all, first post on here.

I have a 2011 L322 4.4 TDV8. It's covered 84000 miles, FSH.

Last week reduced performance kicked in followed by DPF Filter Full. Took it to my local garage and they performed a mobile re-gen whilst having their diagnostic computer plugged in to the OBD.

Apparently there was 36Mg of soot, they reduced this to 6Mg and all was well, until this morning when it went into performance reduced mode. Started it 12 hours later after work and all was well again.

Anybody ever experienced this? if so could you enlighten me please?

Cheers,

Steve.

The usual culprits are the 4 x short hoses on the inlet manifold or a cracked inlet manifold. Look for sooty deposits around the inlet manfold or get a high pressure smoke test done. BMW i3 Electric Car

Search the forum. There's hoards on this topic.

A full DPF is usually not the cause, it's the symptom. In my mind, that's a little disappointing the garage went straight to a DPF clean, when they should know better (just my view).

Usual causes are:

1. Sooted up MAP sensor, which should be cleaned every few thousand miles. This is free so, try it first. Remove the engine cover and it's pretty obvious - has 1x T20 screw on it and a multiplug going to it
2. Have a good look at and around the 4x hoses on the 'donut' (inlet manifold) plus the two top charge hoses (the big rubber hoses at the front of the engine bay). Look for soot or oily deposits in their vicinity or white gunk
3. Failure of the seal inside the union between the throttle body and top left hose (a very common failure). This can be bodged with gas specification PTFE tape or the part needs replacing (£175 but takes 5 minutes to fit on the driveway with no more than a screwdriver). Look at the top left hose adjacent to the left airbox and follow it until you see a plastic fitting with a metal clip. It usually fails in this area so, you'd see sooty deposits around the fitting and on engine components nearby
4. Exhaust Gas temperature sensors down the sides of the EGR on the exhaust manifolds

Less common culprits are the temperature sensors beyond the exhaust manifolds.

If after steps 1-3, you haven't found the cause, it may save you a lot of hassle in the long run investing the £300 or so in the IID tool, so you can get full Land Rover diagnostics and as suggested above, i'd also consider a smoke test, to rule out any leaks, as they are the most common cause of the DPF error on this engine. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Welcome to forum Steve Thumbs Up
Follow Gary's advice Bow down
Your garage has treated the SYMPTON and not the CAUSE which to me, is the sign of a Censored garage to be honest.
If you're not comfortable to do the checks that Gary has listed then take it to a specialist independent Land Rover garage. There are a few in Kent plus our site sponsor Glenrands a bit further in Hampshire (have loan cars).

There is also how it’s driven. DPF regeneration needs sustained steady road speeds above 50mph so if it’s only been used slowly around town on short trips it will never regenerate and quickly fill up with soot. Also if some of the sensors are faulty it will prevent regeneration so a full diagnostic fault check is needed. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

This slightly hints at a split manifold to me. Did it ping up after you booted it a little? Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Thanks for your replies gents.

In reply to Dr Rob, yes I was doing around 70mph and accelerated to overtake.

Taken it all on board and will report back when resolved.

as has been stated you really need to get to what is behind the reduced performance error and get the codes read, or get a code reader (I love the gap one as frequently mentioned here)

I got amber reduced performance from a faulty fuel sensor, was a 5m change once we knew what was triggering it.

If you’re getting the RP message & limp mode, but it clears after you’ve stopped, locked the car & unlocked after a few minutes (as happened to me) try the second turbo actuator rod, through lack of use, this tends to seize up. When you try & hit 2500-3000rpm the second turbo can’t spool up so throws up the dreaded RP message.
There’s loads of threads on here about it/them.

Another possibility….
If you put your foot down at 70mph, taking the engine above 2,500 RPM, it could be a stuck CSOV .
Codes will prove it.

Had it decoded this morning and it seems there maybe a an issue on the inlet manifold side of things, as suggested by GaryRR.

Booked in for next week, smoke test and then hopefully all will be revealed!!

I'll update next week.

Thanks again for your posts gents. Thumbs Up

Steve.

Mine had similar symptoms. It was a cracked Pax side inlet manifold. apparently they were too flimsy to take the full boost of the twin turbos and were upgraded later. Make sure you get an upgraded version if you need to change.

Oh and don't expect any change out of £1600 for IM change. It requires fuel lines and plugs out etc, so not a quick job.
