4.4 TDV8? If yes, I'd bet the valve in the air con compressor if shot. Fit a new compressor. Seen it lots of times including my own motor. Site sponsor Glenrands have done loads and have loan cars Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

There is a known issue with the RCV valve on the air con compressor. It makes it do all sorts of strange things, with a few different symptoms.

It's a PWM controlled viscous coupling, I've had issues with these over the years - not a common failure but one that can affect the aircon. First check - can you hear the fan 'roar' slightly within a minute of starting the engine from cold? (i.e. does it achieve 100% lockup - one of the self tests the ECM does if not run for a while). Second check - if you have diagnostics, can you read the fan speed, and does it vary with engine speed / aircon load? There is no secondary electric fan on a UK / EU specification vehicle. |

I'll check the fan speed today. I can hear the fan spinning from time to time. Should it vary with the air con switched on |

Dependent upon load, yes - also check the reading from the refrigerant pressure sensor if you can. Have you had the refrigerant charge weight (not pressure!) checked? |

I had exactly the same issue as you. Fine on the move but no air con in traffic. A bootfull over 2,000 rpm for a few seconds and it would come back in 30-60s. As others are telling you, it's the known issue with the Refrigerant Control Valve on the air con compressor. The compressor has to be removed to replace it and as these are now over 10 years old, it's best to replace the entire compressor. The cause of your issue isn't going to be anything else so, just a warning before spending money and/or time on fan couplings, re-gassing etc. Expect to pay £800-£1,000 for a garage to supply and fit a new one and re-gas or if you're handy, here's the DIY guide I wrote: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post635799.html#635799 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8 |
