The gearbox manufacturer is ZF. ZF publish hoards of information about their transmissions, including suitable oil specifications. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8 |

Lifeguard 8 has an extra additives package than the 6 so it is not 'OK'! |

It's 'OK' in that it's transmission oil designed for ZF transmissions, clearly it's not the right one (and I don't understand why you're arguing with yourself over this) but 'will do' in the absence of the correct ZF specified one. In the same way that 'some' engine oil is better than none at all. |

If it's clearly not the right one why do you think it's ok to use. Foolhardy advice. |

Does the Owners Handbook for your 2012 L322 cover the 5.0 V8 as well as the 4.4 TDV8? The petrol model uses the ZF 6HP28X transmission (which uses ZF Lifeguard Fluid 6, formerly Shell ATF M-1375.4) and the diesel model uses the ZF 8HP70X transmission (which uses ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8, formerly Shell ATF L12108). Could this be where the confusion has arisen, or is your Handbook specific to the 4.4 TDV8?

This. I don't see the confusion 6HP box needs LG6, or equivalent 8HP box needs LG8, or equivalent 8HP oil is backwards compatible, and can be used in the 6HP box No oils are forwards compatible |

LG8 is a higher grade of oil than LG6.

I really don't understand why an ugly mountain is being made out of this.

I'd be taking it to Mikey (first reply to your post on page 1) at MMP in Dundee for a Megaflush and let him sort it. He's a guru |

8 speed has a thermostatic valve in line with the oil cooler I believe so different flush protocol to the 6speed.
