The handbook is wrong. As previously mentioned.
Lifeguard 6 will be 'OK', Lifeguard 8 will be the oil the transmission manufacturers intend to be used.

The gearbox manufacturer is ZF. ZF publish hoards of information about their transmissions, including suitable oil specifications. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Lifeguard 8 has an extra additives package than the 6 so it is not 'OK'!

It's 'OK' in that it's transmission oil designed for ZF transmissions, clearly it's not the right one (and I don't understand why you're arguing with yourself over this) but 'will do' in the absence of the correct ZF specified one. In the same way that 'some' engine oil is better than none at all.

If it's clearly not the right one why do you think it's ok to use. Foolhardy advice.

Does the Owners Handbook for your 2012 L322 cover the 5.0 V8 as well as the 4.4 TDV8? The petrol model uses the ZF 6HP28X transmission (which uses ZF Lifeguard Fluid 6, formerly Shell ATF M-1375.4) and the diesel model uses the ZF 8HP70X transmission (which uses ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8, formerly Shell ATF L12108). Could this be where the confusion has arisen, or is your Handbook specific to the 4.4 TDV8?

Phil

This. I don't see the confusion

6HP box needs LG6, or equivalent
8HP box needs LG8, or equivalent

8HP oil is backwards compatible, and can be used in the 6HP box

No oils are forwards compatible

Chaps
Wasn’t expecting this to be polarising… I thought it’d simply be 8-speed box so LG8, no questions. Until Smith & Allan informed me differently, and then on checking with LR they advise the same. I’m only a sh*t driveway enthusiast and have no authority to say anything but its very difficult to go against Dealer and oil specialists… Big Cry Big Cry
The attached pic is their last feedback to me…

I understand all the knowledge out here (after all its why I joined the forum) but I’m between a rock and hard place in deciding what to do. I don’t want to dismiss anyone’s experience or information. Cheers, Steven.

LG8 is a higher grade of oil than LG6.

I certainly wouldn't be using non LG8 approved oil in an 8 speed box. Spend a little extra, and get the right oil Thumbs Up

I really don't understand why an ugly mountain is being made out of this.

The ZF 8HP70 uses Lifeguard 8 ATF. Either buy genuine ZF Lifeguard 8 ATF if you're that concerned or an ATF which conforms to the Lifeguard 8 standard S671 090 312 (for example Mannol AG60 which even has the standard printed on the front of the bottle and the actual Land Rover part number stamped on the back [LR023288]).

It's that simple and seems overkill to be contacting ZF to ask, when all of this information is freely available. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I'd be taking it to Mikey (first reply to your post on page 1) at MMP in Dundee for a Megaflush and let him sort it. He's a guru Bow down Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I had my reply back from ZF UK this morning.
After confirming vehicle reg and VIN they have recommended Lifeguard 8 ATF (or equivalent). I had explained the mixed message from LandRover and handbook etc.

So big thanks to all for the feedback Bow down I know it seems like a big of a ‘well, duh!…’ as far as using LG8 but when you’re a DIY’er and your local dealership and handbook tell you one thing its hard to then decide for yourself to go against that! Can only imagine the people maybe in my position that have followed incorrect handbook guidance…

Thumbs Up Cheers, Steven.

8 speed has a thermostatic valve in line with the oil cooler I believe so different flush protocol to the 6speed.
Hence I had Bodsy do it on my drive with his mobile Megaflush as part of my preventative maintenance program Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
