Before posting, I have reseached this extensively on the net and the forum but can't find the answers I am looking for so here goes:

Do you drive with Forward Alert on? I have never had it on.... and I am thinking about it
I gather it gives us a warning sound and applies the brakes in case we get close to something....

any insight?

As with most implementations of it, it can suffer from false positives - reflections from buildings, other vehicle glass, low sun etc. etc. it's not a perfected technology but can help and / or hinder. The alternative is to drive defensively.

mine is turned on and it automatically brakes / slows down while on cruise control if it gets too close to a vehicle infront, it distances itself which is a good thing, only negative thing is that it slows down a lot which could end up getting smacked by another vehicle behind you if they tail gate too close. 2010 3.6 Black Vogue SE

Mine is on permanently and never been a problem.
It does tend to alert quickly if a car coming towards you turns right, in front of you .

Forward alert is separate to cruise control, at least in the area that is covered by the tick in the dash menu. The same radar is used for active cruise, as above, but that’s different to Forward alert.

Forward alert uses the same radar to look for obstacles in front as you drive. If it detects an obstacle and then determines that your approach speed is too high, it will sound an alert and put a warning on the dash. I believe it primes the brakes so you can stop quicker should you need to. It does not apply the brakes, it’s not queue assist, which was never used on the L322, but is in a menu somewhere if you have an IID Tool.

I drive with mine on, as it only has to save you once 🤣… it does sound falsely sometimes, mainly when someone is turning left down a side street in front of you. You know the car is gonna be gone when you get there, but the RR doesn’t 🤣.

The cruise control will brake regardless of whether Forward Alert is switched on or not.

Forward Alert does not brake the car, it only warns the driver so, be aware of this. Not many people seem to know this but, you can adjust the sensitivity of Forward Alert by using the cruise control distance controls (when cruise control is not active), to prevent false alerts / set your own preference as to how late or early it warns you.

I have mine switched on permanently however very occasionally, heavy rain on a motorway, too much dirt or a leaf / bag can block the sensor and it will deactivate (it does tell you if this happens). 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

As above, mine is switched on permanently and has alerted me to a few close calls over the years where folks in front have decided to hit the anchors etc. The adjustment using cruise control distance is very useful to alter the distance sensitivity.
Note that a small green triangle will permanently be on the dash to let you know its "on". Also, you'll get a forward alert notice and a loud beep if it activates.

The ones fitted to DAF HGV's are an absolute pain - they brake hard when cyclists cut across you/pedestrians run across you & there is no reason to react - then, the vehicle telematics flag "heavy braking" & you have to explain yourself to a desk driving transport manager.
Would not be so much of an issue if the telematics flagged up the difference between driver or "assist" action.
Having said that, the adaptive cruise works very well on DAF's.

We are really going down the slippery slope of replacing drivers with operators.

The auto braking systems on Tesla's are a danger IME as they can brake when passing / overtaking vehicles on the motorway. I always give them more than the usual safe distance If I'm behind one. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I agree with Dr Rob. Saved me a few times as well. Why wouldn't you have it turned on? It's a safety feature.

ditto it has saved me one or twice when I have not been concentrating as much as I should of been . I have had a Mazda with the brake assist and it was unnerving when the car applies the brakes it self !!! 2012 Black 4.4 TDV8

I agree with what you said Sam but I rarely use the cruise control and just have the warning sounds which I've found useful in the past.

Maybe it is, but please consider the implications as I posted above.

If you have an insurance "black box" fitted it could make you seem like you are not a particularly good driver.
