I think there's about 8 I can reuse. I'm still not happy with it even after doing all the sums though. Am mulling over my options at the moment. I can spend £250 on tappets and find that the clearances aren't right and then start having to buy more or I can let someone who knows what they're doing set the clearances for me.

I'm leaning more towards letting someone who knows what they're doing set them. The place I bought the cams from has done extensive work on these engines and has an "Extensive" selection of buckets in stock so I'm thinking of taking them down to him to do.

you are a talented chap and clearly know your way around a car. However sometimes some jobs are best left to a specialist and in this case i would be opting to get them to do it. You have ploughed so much time, effort & expense into this project it would be a shame if this part was not correct and from what i see if it is not perfect you will not be happy and will not rest until it is. just my opinion  2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Whilst waiting for the L322 valve clearances to get done it’s the P38 that’s had some tinkering. I replaced the steering box on that last night with one that I’d had rebuilt and am putting a new front caliper on it tomorrow evening.

For me this thread is an inspiration and the reason I am not worried about L322 ownership, David has proved that anything can be done by the home mechanic if you put your mind to it.

I've done a huge amount of "Whist I'm in there" work. This car didn't need a lot of the work I've done to it but I don't want to be taking things apart to get to things again in the future.

All good thanks, Pete. No progress on the Range Rover though. I'm sending the heads down to get the valve clearances set up properly so am just waiting for the guy who is doing it to confirm his availability.

Probably going to be another couple of weeks before I get them back and can start reassembly unfortunately

Good move David I mucked about replacing a head gasket on a DB6 many years ago because I couldn't afford to get it done and ended up with an engine that sounded like a bag of spanners being rattled
Anyway I have rust on mine first time so will have to do that cant remember if you replaced the sills or not ?

I’ve not got as far as removing the cills yet. Thankfully nothing in the rear door shuts or the cills you can see from underneath

There was a lot of surface scale underneath it that I’ve spent a lot of time on but haven’t had to go any further. Yet.

Mine is going in after our September France trip told them just do whatever is necessary so we shall see.

Seeing as there's been nothing done on the car for a while I thought I'd do something useful with it last night...

The final part of the LPG puzzle was removed last night.

The engine is still in bits and the battery disconnected so I used the emergency tailgate opening procedure and then removed the LPG tank. It's being collected by it's new owner on Thursday evening along with the rest of the kit.

The boot floor has surface rust on it presumably due to moisture getting in from the additional holes that were drilled for the LPG.

First step is going to be hoover it out, probably this evening. I'm then going to chip away the surface rust (not using a wire brush on the grinder inside the car for obvious reasons) and then I'll coat it with Bilt Hamber Deox Gel and leave that for 2hrs before washing it off. I'm then going to order some more Bilt Hamber Epoxy Mastic to paint the inside of the wheel well with too.

Here's what I'm starting with:

When I removed the doughnut from the p38 I put grommets in and masticed them in been there for 15 years and all good
