I'm thinking of moving into a L405 from my 322, but I wondered do they rust like the 322s ? My 322 (2012) is fine at the moment but I'm thinking long term..........TT

They have an all aluminium body, so shouldn’t rust on the outside.

I have seen a horror pic of underneath though, where LR put steel and aluminium together…. Corrosion where the rear sub frame meets the body.

That’s always been the issue with Scottish RR’s though… Because they salt the roads for a much longer period…

The 405 Is indeed Aluminium BUT! JLR still bolt steel pipe work to the underside of the aluminium shell, using mild steel bolts! Senseless!

Mine has been rust treated so I don’t expect to have the issues others are having with ACE pipe work etc etc…

My experience with 322 and 405 in Scotland has been that my 2004 322 was pretty good for corrosion, after nine years there was hardly any other than brake lines. It was waxoyled underneath from new though. My 2012 322 was strikingly poor, with corrosion on the rear wheel arches having to be treated every year from year two/three, a new upper tailgate, various window trims replaced, wheels replaced, brake lines needing treated from year three, all due to corrosion. It was really disappointing.

My 405 has had bolts around the headlights and one behind the lower tailgate replaced due to galvanic corrosion. The aluminium trim strip across the tailgate (which includes the number plate light mounts etc) has been replaced twice due to corrosion, the second time after only a year. Various parking sensors have been replaced due to corrosion, the delamination of the covers leading to false positives, some have been replaced twice, the second time after under a year. There is at present a claim with LR on corrosion under the paint of one of the door handles. I expect to be told to "go away" on that. I worry that there are hidden problems of the kind highlighted by Mikey, but short of taking the car apart can't tell. The external panels seem fine.

At the L460 launch I asked what LR had done to address galvanic corrosion. The only comment was that they were using a new platform, and it will be too early to say what (if any) difference that makes.

My general view is that LR have decided to produce cars to a single standard/cost having regard to conditions in all of their markets around the world, rather than try to suit the requirements of the most demanding markets (such as Scotland, wet and heavy use of salt). They provide a corrosion warranty and most (but not all of the time) replace corroded parts during the warranty period. Back in the day of the P38 I think they really tried hard to do their best as regards corrosion, using galvanising, anti chip paint and then normal paint on top. That stopped with the 322 and it may be that "greener" paints and lighter alloys are a factor too. But I suspect they think of the "life" of the car as being from new until it is no longer suitable for the LRAU programme, after that it can crumble to dust and owners take their chances. That is a pity having regard to (a) how good a car it is to use and (b) the ever increasing prices. But what would be better? Only Range Rovers since 1988

C.S. One more point to add to your post, BMW owned JLR during P38
& 2003-2006 MY 322… Then it was Ford and their cost cutting which imho made the 2nd gen 322 rot more… Then in 2009 Tata took over and used even cheaper steel again and hay presto! Rotted quicker than ever before!!!

I agree Craig….. The bodywork on my 2003 L322 was better than the 2011 4.4tdv8 I replaced it with from day 1, but I got the 2011 treated with Dinitrol as soon as I got it and 8 years later it still gets glowing comments how good it is come MOT time.
