Hi, I have been a watcher of this forum for a while but this is my 1st post.

I have a 3.6TDV8 L322 which i am replacing with a L405. We have been looking at the 4.4 diesel and had wanted a LWB but these seem very hard to find.

We have now found a LWB in the trim that we want but it is the 5.0 supercharged engine.

This performance wise ticks the box for me but i have seen reviews of the fuel consumption that say it is horrific (most of these are the SVR veriant which i guess is far worse).

I am used to an average of 22mpg in my current car (28/29 on a long motorway run late teens around town). Would it be much worse than this? Being used to 22MPG, fuel consumption is not at the top of my list but much less than this probably would need to be considered.

The car is obviously competitively priced as it is the petrol and i guess people don't want such juicy engines. Are these likely to be very hard to move on when i decide to sell?

Sorry for the questions but i just dont know much about the petrol versions as had always seen the deisel engines as being the best option and i dont know anyone with the petrol to get real life advise from.

I drove SVR Sports and Full Fat 5.0 SVs during 2020 and 2921 ALOT!

90 % of the time they were driven like they were stolen, fuel consumption was not a concern and over 10000 miles they both would average 16mpg.

However, on occasion I would drive why most people would call normally and would easily see 21-26 from both. I drove to Bristol airport in the SVR once and was early, so I went at the speed limit with sedate acceleration. The result was (on a 90 mile round trip) 30 mpg.

So I don’t think you would be shocked, 21 was easy to get. The issue is the power addictive so you drive them fast!

Perfect that sounds reasonable. I am under no false illusions that with a heavy right foot the number will drop. This will equate for most of my driving but its good to know that on a long motorway trip the economy is far better.

I also found late 20’s was easily achieved with the 5.0 SC (L405 not so much the L322) when driving ‘normally’.

mid to late 20's is totally achievable in 5.0 s/c had many and they are bomb proof, at least mine were and have been

Oh, and you can also achieve 6mpg if you really try!!!

No LWB or SVA experience (which will use more fuel) but my SWB (510) gets maybe 25mpg on longer journeys at steady speeds, down to 16mpg when restricted to shorter journeys only with higher urban stop-start content, average maybe 22mpg (on car's calculation, probably optimistic) on my driving year round (say 10,000 miles). Higher rolling resistance tyres in winter and off road use increase consumption, but absent lockdown there is little urban content in that 10,000. Towing is quite hard on fuel, I've seen 4mpg instant consumption taking a trailer up a hill track. The diesel is better if you do any quantity of towing. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Like you “paddy” I was on the look out for a L405 LWB. It took a while around 2 yrs to find the one I wanted. But it was worth the wait. I went for the 4.4 Diesel MY 2019. Glad I hung to find one, As it was worth the wait, the LWB is great and the Diesel engine is very strong. I tow with mine and get around 20 mpg and up to 30 mpg solo around the doors. I don’t drive it lightly, so ok with these figures. There is a lot of info on this forum so do your research and my advise would be hang in there and get the car you want. ( part of the reason it took so long to find mine is I wanted to buy off main dealer to get the extended warranty) which has been a god send.

On mixed driving I usually get about 23. Did 300 miles towing a car trailer yesterday and got 27 - mostly dual carriageway/ motorway with cruise set to the 60 limit (give or take 10% ) but incl an hour in M25 mostly parked traffic. Using the performance (acceleration rather than top speed) can obviously drop into single figures, but you have to really want to do that as its not very comfortable in the corners so fun typically means short bursts rather than sustained efforts over half an hour and that's easily accommodated in the 20+ results. Mike - MPx
