4.2 SC Huge amount of gray smoke on startup - 118,000 miles

Good morning,
The subject says it all really so any thoughts short of engine replacement gratefully received but that said, how much would a new/recon engine cost?
It has a full service history.

2 Range Rover Classics - one from new but both rusty now.
Rover 3.5 Coupe had since new.
Subaru Legacy 3.0.

Normally points to valve stem seals. Christian.

I think it's probably worse than that. When I said huge amount of smoke, I could hardly see through it. Range Rover 4.2 SC
2 Range Rover Classics - one from new but both rusty now.
Rover 3.5 Coupe had since new.

Spoke to the garage and he thinks I've put diesel in it but would the spout from the pump fit the filler on a petrol car? Range Rover 4.2 SC

The diesel spout is bigger than the unleaded one.

Mine is diesel so I can’t check the size on mine. Diesel will make the car run really rough as well, not just on startup Christian.

I didn't run it for long and the smoke did reduce a little. I put about 45 litres in it to fill up.
Is there a way to find out if the wrong fuel had been put into BP own tanks as I'm pretty sure they wouldn't admit it?
The RAC is coming out so fingers crossed it's just a miss-fuel. Range Rover 4.2 SC

If they'd put the wrong fuel in the tanks there'd be a queue of broken down cars not far from the garage I'd imagine.

Be interested to see what the AA find though. They'll have something to suck a sample of fuel from the tank I'd have thought.

When stem seals fail you usually get a puff of blue smoke on a cold start and I'd imagine you'd have that for quite a while before you start seeing clouds of smoke from the back. Could be wrong though!

Have a look around your PCV valve, mine had a problem where it was sucking oil out of the engine through the valve and then into the throttle body.

This is a documented failure on Jag forums.

I replaced the PCV, twice, which didn't cure it, there's an updated pipe that goes from PCV to throttle body.

Mine was as you describe, really thick nasty light grey smoke.

The RAC have been and it's not diesel so I'm going for your PCV pipework recommendation as my Indie can't 'see' it for three weeks.

Other than excess fuel, There’s only two things that an engine can burn to make smoke, thats oil or coolant.
Coolant makes white smoke normally and hard starting.
Oil can make blue or grey smoke. PCV being blocked would usually be accompanied by an oil leak from a seal or gasket due to over pressure in the crankcase. Christian.

A complete and utter cockup on my part. . .

I topped up the engine oil and didn't put the cap back on. . .

No spillage from the engine, just the smoke plume from the exhaust.

Taking it out today to ensure it's OK.

This has to be a wind up, no one noticed that the oil cap wasn't on?
Mine runs like a bag of spanners without it and it would be apparent immediately imo
