Air Con Packed Up

Rather typical I took a 280 mile round trip today in the lovely sunshine and noticed no air con.... I mean non, not weak, nothing but lovely fan assisted hot air from outside, bummer.

I've checked as best as I can and beleive there is still pressure in the system (old DIY recharge canister with pressure gauge, yes I know !!)

So before I book it into the garage for investigation/fix, is there any common issue on these that I can help and point them too first ?

Thanks

Worth going for a recharge. They should check the system for leaks in the first stage, then, if none, recharge. Normlly there is no cost if they do not get it recharged.

If it has not previously had a recharge, at 8 years old it would not be unreasonable to suppose it needs one, John

Is it a 4.4 tdv8?
If yes, a valve on the compressor fails. Fix is a new compressor. Use Advanced Factors for a non Genuine OEM one Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Am I right in thinking if his compressor has failed that the Fridge unit under arm rest and Air Suspension would've failed too..? MY17 VSE FF Corris

I would tend to agree, just my DIY guage shows very healthy pressure, I know it's far from perfect but I've known AC systems work down to quite low pressures before giving up the shost due to the pressure switch cutting comp clutch out

I had a similar issue….after a trip to the specialist with the right kit and gas….all is good, and Ice Cold Air Con. Given the special gas, it is a garage job, and is expensive, but absolutely worth it.

Hope it’s something simple, keep us updated.

Refrigerant pressure varies with temperature, it's possible you (and the pressure sensor) see enough pressure for the system to run but there isn't enough refrigerant to create the required pressure differential to cool the vehicle.
The only way is to recover the refrigerant and compare the quantity recovered to the specification. If it's low, then the leak needs to be found as it's illegal to refill a known or suspected leaking refrigerant system (although a lack of enforcement means very few tech's care either way).

Well it was something pretty simple, punctured condenser. New genuine one fitted, not straight forward, system regas and £650 lighter, job done.

The gas cost was £100 ish but the bumper having to come off and on is what caused the swearing… so the receptionist told me 😂😂

We're finding R134A is getting more expensive due to production being shifted to R1234YF, currently awaiting delivery of a R744 (CO2) machine, 9.5kg is over £700 - for something seen as an unwanted waste product...

Mine goes into ATS next Thursday. Via Groupon the expensive gas will be £89.99. At least it'll be nice and cold then. 5 years old so it's about time I guess. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged
