Asthmatic L322

Recently I replaced my pulleys, alternator, water pump, and a few other bits.
To do this I had to remove my coolant tank and air filters. I did it over the course of several very cold days.

One of those cold mornings I went to start work on the car and opened the bonnet to find the foam inserts at the end of the bonnet and in the door hinge areas were torn out as they were stuck with ice. Not a major issue as I’ll simply stick them back at some point (still haven’t gotten to that job).

Since completing the work I’ve noticed that i can hear the noise of the air intake on the drivers side. With the windows shut its barely noticeable, however under acceleration it is more pronounced. Not enough to cause me concern… I’ve noticed it now so can’t ignore it.
My assumption was that the suction noise was simply travelling up the gap under the bonnet and the lack of foam inserts allowed the noise into the cabin.

While this is certainly true, I realised today that you can hear the suction of the intake from outside the car, which increases as you rev the engine (obviously). And that realisation included that it was far noisier than it should be for this car.

Is this one of those “they all do that sir” noises I simply never noticed until those foam inserts were missing? Or is there a problem?
I’ve checked and the 4” pipe to the engine is securely fastened, and the Airbox itself is properly seated in the wing hole… in that the box itself fits inside the wing rubber surround and no gaps.

I also popped the pipe off the Airbox and put my hand over the hole and it pulls tight into my hand and i hear no new noises elsewhere. This suggests that there is no leak further down the intake.

I also notice that the noise from the disconnected pipe sounds the same as the noise outside so that noise is either normal but travelling outside the car, or that is the source of the abnormal noise.

Any suggestions as to why my car sounds like Darth Vader taking a long deep breath? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Mine does the same thing, drivers side only. It’s quite loud when the window is down and I’m manoeuvring slowly, especially up a curb or something similar. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

Further to this i had a new noise today…

I pulled into a reasonably steep slope off a main road to quickly let the lil’un out of the car to urgently water the plants. When we tried to reverse back up the slope, and timing a gap in the main road, i would hear a flutter from the engine. It sounds like a turbo dump noise… but a few in quick succession.

I’m not sure if linked to the air noise i am hearing at all? I am aware that the turbos feed each other so suspect the Turbo Bypass Valve is probably to blame somehow? I have an MY12 and believe it would have the newer vacuum actuator (?) which shouldn’t stick?

It has been suggested that this may be caused by the vacuum hoses, and i may need to replace those?

Any ideas? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Mine does that in reverse, as you power on and release, I have a step up into my garage and just squeezing throttle to get up there does it.

Think a few have the same thing.

No noise forwards though….

For some reason…..

Cheers mjdronfield,

Thats reassuring at least. I am still trying to track down a power drop between the turbos (at around 2400rpm) and hoped this might have given some insight…

Funnily enough I was out this morning double checking everything. All hoses appear ok as best I can see without stripping everything down, and all jubilee clips tightened some more - none felt particularly loose.

I did, however, spot something…

Crap picture, but circled is a hose that was not connected! The absolute Censored who last touched the car forgot to connect it back up again! Whistle

While this has not made a difference to the noise, I’ll take her out later for a spin to see if there’s any other changes… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Strangely enough when I was doing an oil change on mine I found a similar hose on the other side nr the air box. It's got a 180 deg bend at the top and is not connected to anything - does it go in the airbox and is it a breather hose? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The photo I took was the driver side and the hose appears to be a vacuum hose.

The passenger side has no such connector on the air box.

The pipe I think you are referring to is clipped to other pipes and is snug to the 4” intake pipe that goes down in front of the engine. I recall that not being connected when I started working in the engine bay, so believe it doesn’t actually connect to anything, nor can I see how it would get to the Airbox as the stiff bends don’t allow it.

I think you are right that it’s a breather hose Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
