Knocking noise at front end

Greets all - newbie here. Bought my first L322 a week ago having normally worked on various Mercs. I have a knocking noise over speed bumps on the front passenger corner - have not had chance to get under it and wiggle things but thus far am guessing it to be an anti roll bar bushing (purely based on experience with a previous CLK), If it is this, anyone know how much of a pain this is to replace? I have found videos of L320s which seem really easy as the bushings are mounted vertically and quite easy to get to but I have also found several websites saying that to change them on an L322 it's a full subframe out job? Can't find a video link for a full fat, hence why I am asking here. Thank you in advance for any help.

The engine sub-frame has to be lowered to change out the anti roll bar, but I have changed the bushes on mine on my drive way with the car on axle stands, not too bad a job. Whilst you are under the car it's worth checking the drop links, as they can produce the familiar knocking noise. Plus, with both drop links removed it is easier to change the roll bar bushes. Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Thank you mate. Was going to do the drop links as well as that’s a nice easy job. Might give these a wiggle first in that case if they could be the issue and save myself some work. Thanks again!

I would change the drop links anyway, they're cheap, it's easy and I've found they can knock even when you can't detect any play.

Yep - have ordered a package with the two links and two bushings. Not looking forward to hacking it off, as per the link but hey ho!
Thanks for all the advice folks.

Hey. It’s highly unlikely to be ARB bushes. Mine had done 143k and they were fine but I hacked them off anyway and changed them.

Knocking at front in order of likelihood is
Rear lower arm
Front Lower arm
Ball joint
Drop links

The suspension on these cars takes a pounding as it’s so heavy. Christian.

Thanks for the tip. Was guessing at drop links anyway (hoping actually as easiest fix!)

The previous owner of mine also thought the drop links were the culprit and changed them but I knew it was something else, I offered him less because of that.

Unless the lower arms have already been done then it will be them, especially the rear one as that has a lot more movement than the forward one.

The arms wear out before the drop links do, because of the type of load they are under. I changed everything.

DO NOT BUY BRITPART unless you like to repeat your work almost immediately after completing it. I had a britpart arm fail after about three months, seems they had forgot to grease the balljoint. Rolling with laughter

Check my project post and it's all on there. Christian.
