Private plate

Right some opinions required here.

Which is better 3numbers and 3 letters OR 1letter, 1number and then 3 letters??

Been given that much choice!, which type of combination looks better on a FFRR?

Any advice welcomed. L322 TD6 2003

Something meaningful and that looks good…I’ve been told!

This is a present for me for my birthday….however those words fill me with dread “meaningful” “looks good”…. it’s like trying to buy an anniversary gift!!!

So am I on safe ground getting;

A) My initials? DMR???
B) first letters of our names? (my son, wife and myself) HSD
C) something humorous? ORC/EMU???
D) Dateless plate with a word like JIG?

Something like JIG612 or W13DMR or E8HSD!!!! Poisoned chalice 😂

The least letters and numbers are the more valuable other than those that have clear name connection.
Generally letters first then numbers are more valuable and sort after than numbers then letters.

It’s entirely up to you and what you think would suit unless you are going for an investment, then follow the above and you won’t go wrong.

Dateless! Three numbers and three letters will usually trump anything date related. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

I have a few, probably pretty basic compared to most on here but I like them.

x11 TJH
x31 TOM
x28 TOM

The initials one actually looks the best on a car, as the first letter is really low but I like the idea of the other being my actual name.

My other half has her initials but the same letter and numbers because my OCD got the best of me.

I like them to look as clean as possible which is probably why I like the 11.

My top tip would be buy from the DVLA Auctions they are MUCH cheaper in my experience: https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/auction/

I quite like mine for the (almost) symmetry

Doesn’t mean anything specific to us as it was on a car we bought 15 years ago but have kept. Will go on my new fatty soon.

Dateless are usually the best ones. Like mine which is F4 BSK which i bought for £800 4 years ago. I only bought it because i intended to be naughty and made it F4B SK with SK being my initials. I'm still surprised I've not been tugged by plod yet about it.

I’ve got a few.

All bought direct off the DVLA site for £250 each. Letter number three letters. Never one to spend they are just a bit of fun.

My old man has a number then his 3 initials.

Unfortunately my name doesn’t lend itself to 3 initials as my middle name starts with “I” and unless I get an Northern Irish plate I can’t do that. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I've got a few MPX plates, most 3x3. Lyonhead has outlined a lot of the financials ... but there are further subtleties. Anything with an "i" in it will be much cheaper. They're Northern Irish and used to be targets on the mainland during the troubles - obviously no longer the case. 3x3 either way round are about the best value dateless. 2x4/4x2 next, and getting ever more expensive the fewer letters and numbers there are with an obvious premium on No 1. DVLA a good source if you can think of something acceptable made from a regular plate. I'd guess they've all gone by now but H1 with initials were only £500 back in the day. I found S44 +initials for a friend's Smart For Four a couple of years back for £250. And got M100 + initials for an M100 Lotus for £250 20 years ago. All direct from DVLA. Try to enjoy it - its supposed to be fun! Mike - MPx

The DVLA have a great search tool that lets you play around with different combinations until you find one that suits.

https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/search#advancedSearch

I managed to get B7GBO through this method. I really wanted B1GBO but that was not available.

At the time it was only £299 some 3 years ago.
