Transfer case issue or transmission?Mechanical / electrical?

I have an issue with either transfer case or transmission... i would really appreciate any ideas if anyone observed anything similar or have had similar experience.
The car is 2011, 4.4 TDV8. ZF8 gearbox. Very low mileage.

Error state is:
- car is only able to move about a meter or so, before it starts vibrating and stops due to what it feels like mechanical restriction from transfer case. Reason i point to transfer case is that when I lay on the ground and ignition is switched off, you can hear loud clanking noise(solenoid pulls back the fork). What results in kind of unlocking the mechanical restriction and car is able to move freely again. (for another meter)
- only one fault is set with this condition; transmission control module P279D-02(Four Wheel Drive Range Circuit)

I am able to make the car drive normally, when i disconnect TC solenoid completely. In this instance there is additional fault to the one above with transfer case P181B-00 Clutch Actuator Changeover Solenoid - Low. What makes sense as it is disconnected.

Question is, why is solenoid, when connected causing the mechanical restriction and only releases it when ignition is switched off - clunks loudly or when disconnected entirely?
Is the solenoid working against the clutches incorrectly? As normally it should only disangage clutch in TC when there is demand for range change. Right?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Maybe the TC motor simply needs to be recalibrated using a suitable diagnostic tool.

The solenoid is normally powered ‘on’ so that the shift fork engages clutch-control mode by default. When disconnected, the spring-loaded solenoid plunger will pull the shift fork to the low/high range change mode position. In both positions, it’s the shift motor that does the work i.e. either applying the clutch or performing the range change. The solenoid just selects which one.

Even if there were an issue with the clutch control, you would imagine that the worse that could happen would be that the clutch ended up locked solid. This would just engage 4WD with the centre differential locked, so I don’t see why this would stop the vehicle moving.

There’s obviously more to it than this, as something is getting locked to the casing somehow – presumably due to a mechanical failure. Unfortunately, I don’t think you have any choice other than to strip the transfer case to find it.

Certainly not a common issue. The DD295 transfer case was first used in the L322 for 2006MY and was carried over into the L405 due to its reliability.
