It's often quoted that Hydrogen can easily be burned in an ICE and thats the emissions being only water makes it a no brainer, easy to do......... Cost of the Hydrogen aside, have a look at this in depth techical explanation of a Toyota trial, one that has more credibility than Daily Fail articles.

One of the current problems to overcome is storing it. letters not necessarily in the right order |

I know but on engines used in excavators which tend to be fairly constant revs etc, not really a comparison to a car. Hydrogen is probably a better fit for their application though. BMW i3 Electric Car 2012 Full Fat RR 4.4 TDV8 (now gone) 2006 VW Touareg 3.0 TDi V6 |

One of the many..... Storing it is a nightmare on both the vehicle and the fuel station, very high pressures involved and Hydrogen is very apt at escaping being able to permeate certain metals for instance. Transporting it, the weight of the tank seriously reduces the payload of a road going tanker, the tank weighs more than the Hydrogen it's transporting. The calorific value is much lower than petrol or diesel so we need a lot more of it in comparison. Its very energy hungry to harvest it. Using Hydrogen produces little by way of emissions but harvesting can cause massive pollution. In the compression ignition engines it produces NOx in large volumes. It's quite annoying really that the solution from the tailpipe perspective is great, Hydrogen is a goer but producing the fuel is another matter. It is complicated but asset wise they already have engine plants and equipment that is easily adapted to making them, also it’s only the first iteration, the next versions are already in development and are getting more efficient. Same with the Cummins and JCB designs. L322 TD6 2003

I have no doubt they will improve the engines BUT, Hydrigen is still expensive to harvest, uses a massive amount of energy that can be used directly and even when those major problems are resolved, ICE is still a very inefficient way of creating rotary motion to propel a car. Well you hang on in there, it’s really going to be a waste of time, a lost cause but I suppose something magical may happen one day if you’re lucky. BMW i3 Electric Car 2012 Full Fat RR 4.4 TDV8 (now gone) 2006 VW Touareg 3.0 TDi V6 |
