Has anybody on here replaced their own cylinder head???

Ok bear with me on this one...

I am seriously considering a JE Engineering LPG conversion for our FFRR (AJ41 engine).

Now the slight sticking point I have is the addition cost of the replacement cylinder heads that need to be installed with hardened valve seats, almost £1100 for the pair (exchange part price) plus just over £1000 for fitting Shocked

I have been looking through TOPIx at what is involved and what I would need to complete the job. Aside from having to have the AC system drained and then subsequently refilled professionally I think it may be a goer.

Essentially you need to strip the entire front of the car to access the timing chains, remove the crankshafts/camshafts, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds and cylinder heads. Then in reverse rebuild but with the replacement heads.

I have priced up the specialist tools from SPX that are required for the crankshafts/camshafts and timing chains and I reckon I could save about £500 - £600 on the labour costs. A shame really as the tools are going to cost over £400!

What I am after really is any advice from someone that has done this before, mainly for a sanity check Very Happy and if there is someone out there do you have the specialist tools that I could perhaps borrow/rent/buy? 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior

Hi Steve,

I have changed the cylinder heads on my car, it is a big job as your quite right that the front of the car needs to be stripped.

Depending on your previuos mechanical experience it is certainly possible to do over a weekend.

The tools you mention, does this include the camshaft locking tools and the vanos set up tools ( i doubt it at that price ), you need them all as can not just put the head back in back in with the cams left in the same position.

The above info is for the M62 engine, i presume it is very similar for the engine you mention.

There is a company on ebay rent out the camshaf/crankshaft locking tools.

Hope that helps.

Bob

That price includes the camshaft locking tool, timing setting tool, timing chain setting tool, fuel spring lock decoupling tool, viscous fan spanners.

There is no need for a Vanos tool as the Jag engine doesn't use the same system for timing.

Had a look through ebay for the company that hire tools but haven't found anything that fits the bill 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior
