I now have all the pulleys, tensioner and water pump and belts ready to fit.
Would it be foolhardy not to change the alternator at the same time?
I didn't have any service history with the car which has now done 110,000 miles so I don't know if it has ever been changed.
Has anyone had theirs fail and if so what mileage approx.
I don't want to spend money for moneys sake but then again it's quite a big job to do I believe.

For what its worth, I had my (failed) alternator changed at an Indi - mileage was 75k ish. The guy told me that they either fail around that mileage or go on to 150k without any issues.
On a 2007 V8 it looked a big job to me - he changed the starting heaters at the same time - small extra cost and worth doing whilst it was in 1000 pieces

Mine failed about 100k, bearings were fine, brushes were fine with plenty meat left, rectifier issue, I'd change it if I were you tbh.

AFAIK the alternator on the 4.4V8 is better than earlier ones with no issues concerning the rectifiers but considering how much you are removing to get the belts and waterpump done it seems sensible to replace it while it's easy to get at unless you are on a very tight budget (£250ish) - just one less thing to worry about. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

My 4.4's failed at 150K kms. It was obvious that 1 diode had failed as the insulation on the winding from that diode was burnt. I suspect other diodes weren't far behind.
The bearings, slip rings and brushes showed no sign of wear and the inside of the alternator was very clean, which was surprising as I go through lots of mud far too often.

I should have had the garage change mine when they did the belts and water pump  2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I thought so Dave. Opie oils had a 15% discount code which made theirs £235 so my Indie undercut it by a £1.
Fingers crossed and all that.

So I now have a nice shiny Denso alternator. Just got to pluck up the courage to fit it all now.

I found the screws in the bottom of the radiator shroud a pain to remove. I've since acquired a battery-operated 3/8 ratchet in case I have to R&R the shroud again in the hope that the task should be easier.
