Noisy Fan noise from the Battery compartment?

Hi Guys and Gals,

Loving my new to me Westie. A few little niggles are coming to light now as 'we get used to each other'.

This one has been there since day one to be honest. There is a fan noise that comes in which is a bit of a howl, it's coming from the front passenger (left hand side) dash area at the bottom of the A post. What was alarming was that it was particularly loud with the bonnet up and appeared to be in the battery compartment. Is there a fan in there? The noise comes and goes but, I would be happier knowing what the issue is and possibly rectify it.

Cheers,

Sounds like that to me too. A bit like a jet taking off. The diesels have a fuel burning heater, in the wheel arch under the battery area. It comes on to help heat the coolant up under certain circumstances, as a Diesel engine doesn’t give out as much heat as a petrol one, generally speaking.

It can also be set using the screen, to come on and warm/defrost the car on cold morning. There was also the option of having a remote fob to turn it on and off manually.

It’s in the passenger wheel arch, behind the liner….

There is loads of info in the Wiki…. Top right under the fullfatrr banner…

Joe90 did a brake line write up, and you can see the FBH in one of his pics….

Thanks guys. I'll take a look at the Wiki (I do forget about TBH).

There is also a fan on the ECU bolted to the battery, these fans can fail and make an almighty noise on the way out, very different sound to the FBH. Christian.

Thanks Caesium.

Update: I can confirm it is the FBH, I used it this morning as it was cool enough for it to kick in and yep, that's the noise.

Is there a fix or should I leave well alone?

It should not be excessively noisy, its just a reasonably deep fan noise, accompanied sometimes by a little smoke and the smell of diesel. Christian.

Yes, I wouldn't expect it to be too noisy it being the car it is but it does howl and it's audible in the cabin.

I'll see how it goes, it's likely to be kicking in over the next few days the way the weather is going.

You can def hear it running, and has already been said, the exhaust for it is down where the front mudflap is or would go, and it will smoke from there occasionally.

It might also carry on for a bit after you turn the car off.
