36mm Viscous fan spanner

Which spanner is best for removing the fan?
I've made a tool to hold the hub but just wondered whether I should get a dedicated fan spanner like the Laser tools one or is it best to get a straight ended one that I could put an extension tube on if it's really tight and need the extra leverage.
Will it be really tight?

It’s a bit of a lottery to be honest, some come off easy while others seem to have been tightened up by the Incredible Hulk.
Personally I would use a 36 MM open end you can put an extension on, that way if it is tight you can give it some beans to remove it, as the dedicated viscous spanner’s break quite easy. Also remember they’re left hand thread, hope its an easy one.

Laser one is OK but obviously you risk a chance of damaging items if you needed to give it a thump to break the seal.

Me personally I'd go to a hgv tool shop and get a long reach spanner do makes life easier

I used one from Island 4X4, Still had to give a couple of good thumps before it shifted though.

DIY

This is an easy one.

Go to a scrap metal dealer.
Find a piece of 50 x 3mm steel around 750mm long.
->Just measured the viscous fan coupling on my TD6, its 32mm, not 36mm so
it is best to build a double ended spanner<-
Drill 2 x 5/6mm holes with centers at 40/45mm in and 26/30mm apart.
Use a hacksaw to cut 2 slots 32mm/36mm apart up to the holes.
Bend the center piece to 90°.
Use a hacksaw to cut off the bent out piece. File the 26/36mm cuts to exact size.
~30mm above the bent out piece bend the strip to 45° (same side as first bend), then
~30mm above that bend, bend the strip back at 45° (this creates a 20mm offset)



If you can't get 50 x 3, try some 50 x 5, but 50 x 6 starts to get difficult to bend with hand tools.

Note - BMW (and others) oil filter housing has a 32mm nut moulded into its top ....

£14 Halfords. Spray the nut first, drink a cup of tea, spray again. Put spanner on, and with a medium hammer, and a thick gloved right hand, hit the spanner to the right, and catch the spanner with the right hand. About 4 inches away. Takes a few. Hits.

Large adjustable spanner and an £8 ebay 36mm special . Clouted the adjustable once and the nut undid Smile been on for 20 years and came off no problem. Viscous fan and shroud binned Smile

I bought a cheap 36mm open ended straight shaft spanner, put an extension tube on and it cracked off quite easy. Was expecting to struggle but it is quite a new fan so I'm happy.

if you use a chisel, you are stressing the bearing on the water pump, with every hit...and that can make the seal fail, ...either will cause the water pump to leak/wear/fail.
