4.4 TDV8 - who's a sucker and who's a dumper?

So, I'm torn on whether to get a transfer pump or not. I'm currently a dumper with a bucket to do it in. It cost me £1.50 and is much more hygienic than a shallower drain pan, risking splashback.

Pros and cons of each method?

My assumption is that dumping is more likely to get the crud out but I don't know if this is true - whether sucking is actually more effective at getting all the oil and all the crud out. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Having found nothing more than a few drips from the removed hose connection after using a suction pump, I now only remove the drain plug for the turbo drain reservoir during every 2nd or 3rd oil change. Mine's hose connecter gets filled with dirt which is troublesome to clean to allow it to be disconnected so that discourages me from going back to draining from there.

I'm a converted sucker. Draper expert is so easy to use. Regular oil changes with the specified oil and there shouldn't be any sludge to worry about. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Independent annual service dumps and I do two further oil changes from the top in between using a Draper vacuum unit.
Serious overkill for the mileage I do but oil is cheap compared to the cost of a new engine. Forty years of progress. 1972-2012

Draper for me, although I lent mine to a mate and this has just reminded me that he hasn’t given it back yet Neutral

I know mine dumps, as he managed to strip the drain plug threads (repaired gratis).

I used to be a dumper, now I'm a sucker.

I don't understand why the draper vacuum pump is such a big hitter on the forum, compared to a little 12V pump which is much cheaper and isn't restricted on capacity.

I have one of these and it drains all 9.4 litres out within a couple of minutes, straight into my container which I take to the local recycling centre. I paid £11 at the time. Looks like it's £13 now...

How long have you had the pump? Some of the 12V ones I've seen videos of seem very slow or unable to get the whole sump contents. Getting all 9.4L is encouraging however - by dumping I normally get around 8.7L. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I've had it for around about 16 months now Gary. I've used it for two changes so far. As long as the engine oil is nice and warm the full 9.4 litres is out within a few minutes. Kev

Draper pump all day long. Did mine this evening just as an interim oil change. I bought it a couple of years ago when I had a Disco 4, never looked back.

I've got a sealey vacuum that I've owned for years. I used that to change my PAS fluid too as I vac'd the system down and kept topping up the reservoir until new fluid came through. Christian.
