Oil on the driveway

I have several spots of black oil on my driveway, apart from the well known O ring problem concerning the outlet from the oil cooler and the cooler itself ( which I will check first chance ) is there another most likely source of the offending oil that I should check for ? RR owner

Usual suspects are the oil cooler return pipe O rings and the oil cooler gaskets. Check your coolant expansion tank for oil contamination. It's very unusual for the oil cooler gaskets not to fail on these engines at some point it seems..... 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Oil cooler gasket or O rings is where I'd put my money on Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

I had spots of oil on my driveway and was lucky enough to catch it quickly before there was oil in the coolant (2012 TDV8). As has been said, I'd put money on it being the oil cooler gaskets and/or the o-rings on the oil feed pipe to the cooler.

It's a fairly easy (but time consuming) job to do it yourself if you're reasonably competent with tools, but there's a full step-by-step in the wiki. Give yourself about six hours to do it! Gaskets (2) are £20 each. O-rings are pennies off eBay. A dealer will hit you with a four figure bill to do it for you. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Thanks everybody for your replies,
checked the coolant as suggested and found plenty of oil on the top of the filler tank, about quarter inch !
Looks like oil cooler gaskets as suggested and probably O rings as well. Lets hope nothing else.
Unfortunately I'm going to take it in to a garage for checkover and quote as the job involved is a bit beyond me.

I will post the results of my enquiries with the Indie garages as soon as, here we go ! Sad RR owner

It’s an inevitable issue with these engines. If you are lucky the previous owner has had it done. It’s fiddly but easily within the scope of a DIY job which will save you a lot as you will be paying for time mainly as long as the cooler is not cracked. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Flushing the coolant after will take some time as well.

First quote £650 if the problem is down to gaskets only, providing cooler is not warped, otherwise £1200 for a new LR cooler fitted, both prices plus VAT! Independent garage. Don't think I will be going there.

Second quote is £690 for a new cooler ( and flush of course ) fitted, probably non LR , and includes VAT Very Happy

This is probably where I'll go but still awaiting other quotes.

Found some oily sludge on the top of the coolant which I removed and after driving 100 miles checked again and coolant appeared oil free so I am hoping this was residue from a previous flush following this job possibly being done by the previous owner.
I cannot determine this as all history was lost by the seller apart from service book with no mention.

I probably will not be this lucky and it would still leave me with an oil leak problem !

Will post eventual outcomes. RR owner

If the independent is changing the oil and coolant at that price, that's certainly where I'd be going (other than doing it myself). I wouldn't be fitting a cheap and nasty non-genuine oil cooler. They may tell you that the cooler is warped, but I doubt it. Besides, will they have proper equipment to confirm this anyway? The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Both quotes are from independent land rover specialist and are both recommended by various users.
Suppliers of oil coolers I checked give a guarantee of one year for a genuine Land Rover part and two years for a 'cheap and nasty' oil cooler ?
I would not use either unless engine oil and coolant were changed. RR owner

The lower priced quote includes an OEM cooler which I think is OK, any comments welcome. RR owner
