Handbrake Shoe Replacement Issues

I replaced the handbrake shoes the other day. I had no issues afterwards but rarely check whether the handbrake actually holds the car on a slope.

Off to the MOT this morning so thought I should try the bedding in procedure. Everything seemed fine until I put the handbrake on at the MOT garage.

Lots of unpleasant noises from the rear end and pinging from the dash telling me I had a parking brake fault.

C1A46-64 Mismatch between motor drive current and resistant force.

Had to drive home with a clear issue, particularly on one side. Found the upper rear side of the new shoe completely worn down but no real idea about what had gone wrong.

Aside from possibly getting the adjuster wheel between the bottom of the shoes facing the wrong way everything appears okay.

Any ideas what I should be looking for?

Blimey Mike that is a mess.
Did you remember to adjust the shoes tight up to the drum and then back them off about 6 clicks?

I’m always surprised handbrake shoes wear on cars, why should they, you only apply the handbrake when the car is stationary so how come they wear?
Or are a lot of cars driving round with badly adjusted handbrakes wasting fuel. Question

I followed the workshop manual that says to back them off 8 clicks.

I suspect the EPB bedding in procedure meant the EPB module ran out of adjustment and slipped off the end of the gear which is what is making the noise.

Now I am unable to release the handbrake, either via the red loop under the cup holder or the loop in the boot. Probably not pulling hard enough but can’t pull any harder.

Ah the joys of drum brakes....
8 clicks sounds a lot. When I was looking at some videos of shoe replacement it was back it off just enough to free the friction which was also how I remember doing it on old cars. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I know it doesn't help now but when I replaced mine I didn't do the reset and it holds perfect.
Hope you can sort it.

Just read the bedding in procedure and it looks both complicated and impractical unless you have access to a private road. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Wish I hadn't tried the bedding in procedure. What sort of idiot writes a process that allows the controller to wind the adjuster off the end of the shaft?

As you said it yourself,
the adjuster appears to be fitted the wrong way round.

From your picture, see how it is pushing the spring upwards, thus pushing the top of the shoe onto the drum.

Despite my many years of experience with fitting various brakes to various cars this is just another reason I'm going to let a LR specialist garage do mine when they need it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

As far as I can tell the orientation of the adjuster is for consistency rather than operation. Even turning it around the other way the spring still gets pushed up. it is the pressure from the spring on the adjuster dial that ensures that it doesn't come undone in normal operation.

Sadly it appears my EPB module is jammed solid and refuses to release. This is going to get expensive!

Have you got an IID tool? I know I've seen an instruction on there for the handbrake. See if you can possibly do a reset?

I've tried all the options on the IID Tool. They all fail.

It appears the internals of the EPB module are jammed solid.
