Well had a go today, pressed the button, whoooosh but not lowering of tailgate. Had a feel for the release catches and while pressing the button i could feel the catches moving but still no lowering of tailgate. So I hit the tailgate with my hand while pressing button and it released. Squirted some wd40 in and tried a few times and it now works ok, will put some oil in, in the next couple of days. I think it was the right hand side one that was sticking.

I've had this start happening over the last few days in my MY12 Westie - press the tailgate button as the motors sound but doesn't unlock, press 4-5 times and the same, but then next press nothing at all. Start the engine press and motors sound again but only unlock about 25% time

The combination of WD40 and a spurtle tapped with a rubber mallet did the job. My Land Rovers, so far:
