Run for the hills?

Picked up my L405 AB on Friday. It's a 2015 AB in Corris Grey. 65K miles, but had the V8 diesel and trim level I wanted, so decided to go for it. Initial impressions were good, until I got an intermittent airbag light. There was also a rich, oily burning smell inside the car when the AC was on, although this would come and go. Later on Friday, I had a yellow engine light, so promptly returned home and switched cars. I dropped the dealer an email, outlining my discoveries, and they arranged to take it for service first thing Monday.

An Indy Jag mechanic implored me to keep my XF battery well charged and topped up if necessary. Remembering his advice, I put the battery charger onto my new pride and joy on Saturday. I also walked into a very sharp corner of the boot lid and have a nice cut on my head. After charging, the car worked well for a 10 mile journey on Saturday evening, no lights. On Sunday I went for another run, again no lights and 20-30 minutes of quick driving on back roads.

I dropped the car to the dealer's service centre first thing yesterday morning and was expecting it to be delivered back to me in the evening. No issues present, although some historical codes relating to low voltage. A call came shortly after the agreed handover time, the car had gone into restricted performance mode as the service manager was driving it to me. It's now back in the service centre and a fuel pressure problem has been identified.

The car is now being transferred to a local indy for further diagnostics and tests, with a hopeful resolution to come before the end of the week. I PX'd my 2015 Discovery SE Tech as I had a continual fear of its engine. I wrapped it in cotton wool and it wanted for nothing. My plan is to give the situation a week to be rectified, if it isn't, then I'm likely to go down the route of rejecting the car.

As yours is the same age and engine as mine ...

... this "could" be your fuel pressure issue - sounds very similar:

Do they still have the oil cooler issues on the L405? Sounds like that could be leaking….

Sounds a familiar story to me. Sold my lovely D4 because of the dreaded crank issue and dipped my foot in the L405 world only for it to turn bad Big Cry

First LR to leave me stranded at the side of the road and to really pee me off it did it again 10 days later.

Lost all confidence and got rid of it. Mine had only covered 40k miles. Cars of this age and mileage, carrying such a hefty price tag really shouldn’t fail so easily in this day and age.

Good luck with it because when they work properly there isn’t a car I’d rather be driving.

I think so.

Would explain why the oil cooler on mine was replaced just before I owned it. What do I put here then?

Oil cooler is a problem on the 4.4 in the L322, L405 and L494.

I'd rather the issue appeared shortly after purchase than in 12 months time when you have no recourse however.

If it's the car you want and it gets fixed, I don't see the issue with keeping it. At least you know what has been repaired and it shouldn't have the same problem again (well, not in quick succession anyway). Kev

A local specialist has diagnosed the problem to be high pressure fuel pump related.

First thing I did on mine was clear codes and change the battery for a new one. Its like a 'clean start' for a new owner. I appreciate this will not sort mechanical issues but it might just stop you chasing your tail on other warnings.

If you get the intermittent air bag light again suspect the harness in the drivers squab - they get damaged by drivers getting in and out - easy fix.

Good luck. Thumbs Up 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus
