While working under the dash to install a trailer brake controller, I saw what might be a missing piece of ductwork. I could see the fan under the center of the dash, and what might be a missing elbow.

By the number of missing screws and parts, it would not surprise me that parts were left out. The Carfax documents more than one AC repair, so clearly it's possible.

Any ideas?

Oddly enough I had exactly the same!
As part of my blower replacement I also replaced the fsr which goes in next to that very missing piece.

The fsr is a common-ish failure so suspect it’s been replaced on yours and not carefully put back together. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

My part has been missing since it arrived and not noticed any issues. Fixing a new part looks to be fiddly, so I’m not going to bother.
When the fan blows hard/fast, it’s everywhere it needs to be. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
