I'm not denying tuning boxes don't work because I think properly engineered boxes with their own looms, so they collect various amounts of data from the engine do work. A MAF sensor fooler doesn't.

I used to work for TUV Sud. All i caution is that people might not understand what TUV approval means - I see it a lot. There's all kinds of approvals and certificates you can get. The TUV approval of the DTUK boxes applies to its roadworthyness under German automotive laws. The product is tested to ensure it doesn't incur any safety issues or alter the emissions of a vehicle - In Lehman's terms, to check it won't cause a vehicle to fail it's MOT. It doesn't mean the product is an approved performance enhancer, independently verified. The test specifications also state engine service life is not considered in the scope of the testing performed, nor is a validation of power differences. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Another remapper I forgot to mention is Mapro in Portsmouth. They use a proper rolling road.

They will only harm your wallet. If the ECU gets a whiff of anything being too far out of spec it will throw you a restricted performance warning and end your fun. Tuning boxes were great for old diesels where you could just over fuel and leave a cloud of black smoke behind you but once DPF's came in the parameters to fool the ecu into creating more power are limited. If you do go for a remap I'd strongly advise a specialist LR tuner as they will have the experience to know not just how to create power but also how to maintain DPF function. I'd expect a proper retune to also include changes to the gearbox programming as well for optimal drivability and economy. Even just a gearbox reprogram on it's own would likley help.


This is one thing I'm thinking. Maybe a full re-map isn't what I want and actually I just want some custom mapping on the transmission ti make it quicker at engaging and shifting. but I'm still a bit mystified why someone would think the shifting or throttle response is slow on a TDV8 4.4. I'd say the shifting is not optimal vs revs and torque and probably programmed for emissions and economy over drivability and hence why I'm increasingly using the paddles but when I do the shifts are near instant and way better that on the ZF6 speed on my old Audi with paddles which I never used. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’m following this thread with interest…

A few months back I enquired at a few places for ECU and gearbox remaps and options. Bell Auto stated that we cannot flash via our IIDTools as it’s an ECU out and workbench update. Not a major issue as I had the same on my 3.0 tdv6 RRS (a little tip… don’t watch them do it! It worries you how precarious the process is Laughing )

I also asked places about a gearbox remap, and was told it’s not possible on the L322 (at least for the 4.4 tdv8… don’t know about other models).

My reasoning for these requests were to improve throttle response from the car, and if you increase torque you should ideally tweak the gearbox to ensure it works properly with the increased power… rather than it simply accommodating the increase.

However, in the last year of owning and reading these forums, I am pretty sure I’d get significant improvements in cleaning the gunk from the throttle body and cleaning/replacing various sensors.

I also plan to replace my gearbox oils. Once all that Is done and everything is running as it should, I’ll reevaluate what I want. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Saab 9-3 TTiD. Surging power delivery and unstable speed control. Andrew tried to fix a few things but I think I ended up selling it on ebay. The map wasn't that much more expensive. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Oh very surprising as wasn’t that a commo. Vauxhall and Isuzu engine? I think I’ve even seen it in some boats.

Fffr to make it even more controversial for some. I think you would really like a pedal box. I was a total non believer but got one send to try it out. I ended up paying for it to keeping, and othered another one for the Mercedes-AMG GL we had at the time. I still can’t comprehend why it works, but is just does.

Ensure that the ecm is at the latest level. My April 12 build wasn't and the driveability improvements after updating to the latest level were significant, which included keeping the torque converter locked at lower engine revs on light throttle. However IMO there is room for improvement in torque converter and gear selection management from standstill when using more than very light throttle, particularly noticeable taking off uphill or when towing.

Good point GraemeS. I’ve read about that before… possibly from you! I do intend to flash the engine and gearbox to the latest versions once I’ve cleaned the gunk. I’d like to see that improvement first, before flashing. At that point I should be “as intended” and can decide if that’s enough for me. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
