I assume my plenum is fubar?

Hi Guys,

I've always though my L322 smelt of diesel fumes a bit, but when removing the engine cover to undo the drivers side air intake pipe to change the air cleaner, I was confronted with this.

Is it safe to say that this is Censored and a new one is needed? I don't get any RP issues, just some smells, and (to me) underwhelming performance. I mean could it be messy oil changes, to have all that mess pretty much all around the plenum?

New part £500. You could try repairing it with some pop rivets along the seam ( mine has this and isn’t leaking) 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Have you just bought this recently?
If so that amount of accumulated muck is all the evidence you need that it was sold to you with an existing fault which will help your case.

The performance should definitely not be underwhelming.

Hopefully you will get it sorted and notice a change.

I managed to extend the life of mine with epoxy for a good few months but , with hindsight, I should have renewed it ages back. A few days back got one from Maltimgs and sorted it. Result = soot levels low, better mpg, smooth power yield and peace of mind. The gunge in the old one and the throttle body was staggering . 60plus k miles and no supermarket diesel used. I reckon a good 5% plenum volume occupied by gunge. ----------------

Buildup of black gunk seems to be a normal condition for these intakes even when working correctly. Even if you clean or replace the plenum to remove this build-up there will be still deposits within the manifolds and around the intake valves which you can't get to without a significant teardown of components. It's a good idea to regularly clean the MAP sensor as when this gets blocked it definitely caused a bit of hesitancy on low end pickup and maybe also remove the throttle body to ( carefully) clean this and the EGR pipe that sticks into the Plenum. Also just how long before it gets a new coat of gunk when you have cleaned it. I was watching my EGR valve position and operation via the GAP IID tool and cruising on the M-way it's open most of the time and only closes on fairly hard acceleration and overrun. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
