We have a similar sound on a 4.4 diesel. It is a belt going over a small pulley wheel - only happens on startup then goes.

My mechanic is an ex LR Chief Technician and knows his stuff. We did a belt tensioner mod earlier this year when we had the engine out. Long and short of it is (on our diesel) there's nothing wrong mechanically just a noise.... we are trying some belt dressing next.

I know ours is a diesel but similar issue!...

Totally agree with what’s been said, I had a squeaky noise and a rumbling at 45k. It turned out the bearings were shot on an idler pulley. Had the whole lot replaced with Land Rover parts and the squeak has now returned on startup and then it goes. I think it’s just one of those things on some cars. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

As has been said above, sounds like a belt tensioner or idler. Kev

Thank you all three of you for your comments, very much appreciated. All the issues experienced sound identical. As you say, it does go after a short while, so I won't worry about it.

Many thanks to you all once again for sharing your knowledge.

I'd get it changed either way mate. If the tensioner goes, you'll soon know about it when everything else gives up under the engine bay

Mine does it as well. I think the colder weather makes the belt stiffer hence the noise.

I get the same when it’s cold and damp. Goes within a few minutes. Keep us posted on the belt dressing Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
