My usage will be c10k miles a year.
I’m not heavy footed or believe I’m in a Porsche.

Looking for a tyre that I can use on some pay and play and green lanes.

Ideally I’d like to keep around £175 a tyre

I'm going GGAT3 in next few weeks. I've deliberated and researched for 2 years!

Oh, and I'm going 255 55 20 so get a bit more sidewall height. Spare will fit into well albeit at a lower psi and some wiggle. It won't fit (IIRC) if you have the spare wheel "helper" but that can be removed quite easily. I carry a small 12V pump all the time to pump up. For green lanes the grabber will definitely be better than any road or all season tyre but you don't need to be driving like you stole it to benefit from wet braking ability in an emergency stop.  2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

On my old Audi A6 Allroad I ran Eagle F1's for 85k+ miles (not the same set ) and never had an ABS moment but then again I never had to slam on the brakes in an proper emergency so I could well have saved a lot of money going with budget tyres
Just one look at the tread pattern on the AT3 and you can see they are going to be a compromise on wet tarmac just as looking at a road tyre you just know you will be struggling off it.
The Vredestein Quatrac 5 looks interesting but never seen them on an L322 and here is the other factor - what happens to these tyres when they are supporting 2.7t of L322? AFAIK the AT3 have a softer sidewall which will be better for comfort but deformation under load will be worse. I'd say the Verdre's have a pretty stiff sidewall (even on 255/55 20 profile) but is this for a reason ? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’ve run AT3’s on my Discovery 2 for the last 3+ years. Found them to be great in all weather conditions and at home on the motorway or on shoot/farm tracks.

I got the AT for my winter wheels based around so much good feedback on here. I must admit that I find them pretty bad on the Range Rover when driving on the road. That test is totally aligned with my experience. And whilst they may have been the quietest compared to the others in that group they are so loud compared to Pirelli scorpion all season with noise control. Sadly my normal 22” wheels are being refurbished so I drove on these to the continent. It was loud, uncomfortable and not as stable.

Unless regular off-road is required I really wouldn’t recommend them to anyone for normal driving.

It seems odd that every user of AT3s on here is very impressed with them except you.
Perhaps yours are faulted? or you might have the wrong pressure? You could have a buckled wheel, lost a balance weight or damaged a tyre hitting a pothole?

It is isn't it. But interesting to see that a panel of independent motorjournalists notice the same things in tests. I just feel like I should have listen to logic which is that an AT pattern just cannot possibly compete on road with a normal tyres.

Having not driven a L405 for ages I test drove one with these tyres fitted .
Was just looking before a laid down my hard earned cash. Fained interest & drove it for about an hour on many different road surfaces.
I found the General Grabber AT3's to be quiet, with plenty of grip . And NO I didn't drive slowly
Would I fit them to my own car YES. Probably in a slightly bigger size in 20" to give me a bit more sidewall

I tend to ignore personal user reviews of tyres unless they are just concerned with things like noise or wear rate. Unless you are doing emergency stops or cornering to the limits of grip most of us are driving well within the safe limits of even the cheapest tyres. Tyres matter when the difference in stopping distance in the wet is the difference quite literally between life and death and these parameters can only come from independent tyre tests in controlled conditions. Just as it's impossible for an all seasons tyres to perform as well in each season as dedicated winter and summer tyres it's also impossible for an 'all terrain' tyre to perform as well on the road as a dedicated road tyre. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Totally agree.

And it’s the same with the sound rating. There can be so many variables including one’s own hearing and the car they drive or the roads they drive on. That is why there is a controlled conditions comparison. And there is in that test 4db difference. That is actually quite some difference. Definitely noticeable to me.

My word this seems a debate that will go on forever.
I had a puncture yesterday on the rear of my L322, she is running on Continentals and they have about 6mm left on them. Just m6 luck the puncture was near the side wall so it’s a new tyre, plus there are some other bits of damage so I will probably replace both tyres. I live down a single track road which is in the backend of nowhere with small stones and mud. My previous Discovery ran on AT3’s and tyre damage was minimal and they did wear well.
I know a V8 is a totally different animal to a D2 but what else is available for this job? My opinion is you need a tyre that is hard enough to wear well but soft enough to grip especially in the wet, the tread pattern needs to be able to spit out stones and not hold them and work their way into the tyre casing. And of course you have to balance road noise, the cost is important but if they last longer than a road tyres they become more viable.
So I was thinking General Grabber AT3 255/55/20, unless anyone has a better suggestion Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
