So, I finally got my new L405 5.0 SC AB LWB last week (see below).

I'm really happy with the car but won't be using it all the time, as I have the L322 for local daily driving with the dogs.

Please can anyone tell me which C-TEK trickle charger I need, which sort of connector is required, and how I connect it to the car?

I've tried looking on YouTube but can't find a "How To Guide" anyone know different?

I think if you just want to maintain a good battery any of them will do.

If you want to fully charge from totally flat, the bigger chargers will do it faster. Smaller ones might not do it at all.

I have an MXS 7 and it’s done everything I’ve needed. That’s a 7amp charger… hence the number. The 10 will charge faster but costs more.

They were on offer last week with Amazon.

I use the towing electrics to charge, using an adapter from the site shop.

If you don’t have towing electrics, you can connect a comfort connector to the battery permanently and just plug in to that from your charger.

It's not charging from flat, just maintaining a new battery.

I have a spare one of these, albeit about 5 years old, although it was only ever used for about 6 months.

Would this work on the battery for a L405 5.0 SC?

The MXS 5.0 charges batteries from 1.2-110Ah. Does the 5.0 not use a 110Ah battery? I’ve got one and have used it with ease to charge/ condition the 4.4TDV8, the 3.0TDv6, smaller diesel and petrol engines.

That should be fine for maintaining it. You might get one of those connectors with the charger. They just bolt to the battery terminals. I’ve no experience with the L405 though, I think the battery is in the boot now? Those with 405s will be better placed to advise on where to connect and cable routing etc…

I think the 5.0 petrol is between 80 and 110Ah… you can either look at your battery or put your reg. number in the ECP website and it’ll tell you what size battery, as two ways of confirming/ finding out…

Entering the vehicle type into ECP website suggests a few alternative batteries from 75 - 90ah, so all below 110ah, which I guess is the main thing.

Yes, MJD, I think you might be right about the connector, I'll check in the box. I also think you might be right, and the battery may be in the boot on the later L405 / 5.0.

There is also a second Auxilary Battery (14ah) coming up on the EPC website, so not sure if it has two batteries now?

The crazy thing is, you no longer get an owners manual with a new L405, apparently JLR say it's for paper saving reasons!!!

They told me there's an APP I can look at, but I've always liked a manual to refer to.

I use the CTEK 5.0 and it works just fine on my AB V8 S/C. The auto stop/start even works!

I also have a CTEK MXS 5.0 and it does a good job of maintenance charging. I just connect it up to the terminals under the bonnet whenever I'm not going to be using the car for a few days. That's on my SDV8 which has a 95Ah/850A CCA main battery plus a 70Ah/760A CCA auxilliary battery. Kev

Do you have the deployable tow bar? If so then I'd second MJDronfield and advise using that with a connector from the site shop and the CTEK 5. That's what I do and it works well. Advantages include: not having to get at the battery or terminals which are quite well hidden away; regularly exercising the tow bar mechanism which is liable to stick if ignored for months/years on end; and all cabling external to the car so no seal strip deformation. Mike - MPx

Thank you for your reply MPx - I didn't spec the tow bar, so unfortunately can't use that method.

I think it should be quite straightforward from what I understand. If I can fix the CTEK comfort cable to the battery terminals underneath the rear loadspace area, and add an extension cable if necessary, this should leave an easy access charging point in place.
