Hello all,

Quick question

At what point do the upper tailgate struts support the wait of the tailgate?

Is it only at the *very end* of the travel on the strut or should it support at say 70% onwards?

Mine supports only at say, 100% of travel. It will do for now, but I feel it should support a little earlier.

I've just replaced mine and they now take over at approx. 40% lift. Any less than that and they're not working correctly.

Below 40% they do very little and the tailgate can slam pretty hard even with new gas springs on. Christian.

Confirmed what I was thinking.

These will be replaced in due course. I'm currently investigating all the various issues of note with the car.

First thing is to get it running and driving with MOT - if we get that far, I can start to cover off the smaller things.

I recently replaced some of mine with aftermarket struts and can also advise that they start to provide support around the 40-50% or so lift mark. 2010 RR SC

Related question if I may.

Out of interest, are the struts affected by temperature? Mine are old (I've only had the car 3 months or so) and I noticed recently the lid wasn't being held up as it was previously; a change which coincided with a cool spell. They're listed for replacement but I was just curious.

Cooler weather coming. One family car battery has taken a dump already - today!

My car is over 15 years old now and TBH the struts haven't behaved very well for years with the tailgate slamming shut if allowed to. Fitted after market ones a week ago and the results are spot on. Can just let go of the tailgate when closing and it shuts without a hint of aggression. Previous cars:

@ Chris, old ones certainly affected by temperature. Cold = Weak.

Ha, ha. First cold, frosty morning with a ffrr under my ownership and the upper struts totally refused to play at all. Case proven. Off to buy some replacements!
