So SWMBOS fix it again tomorrow was due for replacing, well when I say replacing it will be hanging around for a few months yet for no1 to learn to drive, we have decided to go electrical.

Looking at her daily, she does 15 miles to school and back every day. twice...

so she is getting through quite a fair amount of petrol, so we have decided to get an EV and after looking at a few we decided on the Kia E-Niro.

Delivery in a couple of weeks.

Time to sort out a home charging point. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

You will be amazed I'm sure and wonder why you didnt do it years ago.

Home charging points, forget the approved installers and the government grant, buy a charger and get a local sparkie to do the install, works out cheaper every time. There are some decent wallboxes on Amazon at under £300. Octopus GO tariff is usually the one of choice, 5p per Kwh between 00:30 and 04:30, although this may have changed with the sudden energy price rises, often you need to talk to sales rather than try to sign up online.

She wanted a small automatic hatchback with leather, auto everything, cruise, totally keyless locking and starting and with a decent sound system....

Not many cars out there that fit that bill..!!

They are very nice cars BUT they reall6y missed a trick not having it Plug In. One of the most expensive ways of generating electricity is with a petrol engine, the only way it really gains is when you brake, regen braking giving you energy recovery, at all other times its a disadvantage with extra weight etc.

Got a Kia Niro 4 petrol hybrid as SWMBO’ s motor. It’s 3 months old and averaging 52.6 o the dreaded E10. Fully loaded….leather, heated and cooledseats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise, car play, phone charging pad etc etc. It’s a nice drive not the fastest but easily keeps up,with traffic. Weird going 70 on a motorway and engine switches. Off,

Got a Rolec from my local merchant, you have to be a bit careful on chargers and we do know a bit about this as we have been putting in feeds for them on the new houses. Lots of chargers aren’t compatible with houses which are on PME supplies where the Neutal and Earth are basically one connection. The lack of a true earth causes and problem and these charging boxes will need a separate Earth Rod installing too. Which may be inconvenient, or difficult or just ugly….. many new chargers get round this by using circuitry which negates the PME issue for example, Rolec has TruePEN, which means that you don’t need the separate earth Rod and can just wire it up to the CU using 6mm twin and Earth for a 7.2kw charger, simples.

Anyhow, I’ve got a Rolec EVHS-2020PEN coming, which I’m getting our friendly spark to put in for me nice and neat on the wall behind the Consumer unit, I’ve got spare ways in my board, and we can make space for its own RCBO, so a dead easy install.

As for the car. It seemed very nice on the test drive, comfy, roomy, quick enough and seemed much better finished compared to the VW ID3, for similar money, though if you wanted a new VW it’s was going to be June unless I had a pre reg off the forecourt for about £2000 over list….. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's funny isn't it because they could hardly give away ID.3s at the start of the year when we were buying.

Unfortunately the desire for a sunroof and VW's stupid options model (fixed by life, family, pro or whatever they were called) meant you had to forgoe the EV grant to get a sunroof. This made the price difference between non-sunroof and sunroof cars something like £5k.

They've seen sense and changed their pricing but too late for us - we went with a Zoe for a bargain price and it came with a free EV chargepoint and installation. Not without issue and a BP Pulse chargepoint wouldn't have been my first choice but it does the job. And as you say, it includes PEN protection for the earthing issue.
