4.4 TDV8 Fuel gauge issue (a slightly different one!)

I had been putting off going to the fuel station because of the hideous price of diesel round me at the moment.

I'd done just over 525 miles on a single tank and the computer was saying I had 49 miles of range left, no fuel light on yet.

I did a short trip on Wednesday morning, about 20 miles, got back in the Rangie to come home again and all of a sudden the fuel gauge had shot up to nearly 1 'pip' and computed range was over 80 miles Shocked

I thought, something's not right here, I cannot have gained range as that short trip would not have been very economical.

Anyway I decided to fill up because I was now terrified the light would never come on and the first I would know would be the engine cutting out and having to ring the AA.

I put 99.39 litres of diesel into a tank the owner's manual says holds only 97L and which my fuel gauge was telling me wasn't even empty... any ideas anyone?! 2012 L322 TDV8 Vogue SE: Buckingham Blue

Yes - you've been very lucky you didn't run out.
99L is about right for an empty tank plus the filling tube, why didn't the light come on? I can't be sure but as the gauge and light rely on the float I suspect they will never be 100% accurate as a litre of fuel will only make a fraction of a millimeter difference to the height of the fuel in the tank.
Easy fix, don't run it so low problem fixed Whistle
There are good reasons for not running with an empty tank but I can't think of a good reason to run with an empty tank.

I put 90L in with the range still saying 80miles left. My range jumps around a bit and you may also want to use the calibration feature in the sat nav as this 'may' be a factor. TD's have a 97L tank but with any car it's never good to run the tank right down. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks guys, I run my own spreadsheet for fuel economy ("fill to click" is my usual method) so I had already come to the conclusion that the LR computer is both optimistic and a liar...

It was not my intention to run it that low, but I had been lulled into a false sense of security by the trip computer and gauge reading.

I suppose from now on I will just try to refill when I've done about 450 miles. Rolling Eyes

Stan, that's very interesting because the handbook definitely says less... I wonder if that's to allow a margin of error on the computer? 2012 L322 TDV8 Vogue SE: Buckingham Blue

Maybe the in-tank lift pump has a different pickup depth or they allow more safety margin in a diesel to protect the high pressure pump. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
