Both sides blocked simultaneously? Do the 2 pipes going into the rear muffler join inside the muffler?

Don't need the guards off. But they are awkward to access. They will be tight

Both sides won't block simultaneously, usually the LH seizes. It doesn't turn, which then chokes the 4 LH cylinders, and pressurises the crankcase. This then finds its way out the crankcase breather and is drawn into the RH turbo/intake Thumbs Up

Out of interest do you refer to the LH side as viewed from the rear of of the motor (ie near side) ?

…. And having now started it, would reconnecting the RH pipe to the (hopefully) good turbo allow it to run thus proving the thesis ?

Just out to investigate down pipes & turbos.

Now here’s the crunch point.
If turbo(s) need replacing is this BODY OFF/ENGINE REMOVAL as I’ve been lead to believe ???

Strictly speaking, no.

BUT, depending how the turbo has failed, you may have a load of shrapnel through the intake system. At that point, it may be beneficial to remove the engine and rad pack to clean everything properly

You cannot remove the body from an L322, its a monocoque Thumbs Up

And I have done turbo replacements in customers driveways in the past. Not fun, but needs must Laughing
In the workshop, we support the engine from the top, and remove the subframe

Thanks Mikey.

Well I’m holding my breath at the minute.
The engine running yesterday my have sealed the fate of this car 🙁.
I’m in a catch 22.
I can’t get under the car to investigate the turbo as the suspension after 6 weeks is sitting on the ground, and the dash states “start vehicle to raise suspension” Big Cry
I can’t put it on ramps without starting it either.
Do I start the car again to execute either or both of these ??

I looked at a 3.0 TD6 this afternoon, which may act as a temporary (or permanent) replacement.
Tho not having the power or smoothness of the V8, it does look somewhat more manageable for someone of my capabilities & facilities.

Does the TD straight 6 from BMW have a better rep for reliability than the V8’s ?
Tho high milage This one does have receipts for recent cam belt & turbo.

You can raise the car with suitable diagnostics without the engine running

While possible, you can start the engine and raise the suspension, but its not advisable. If you absolutely NEED to, remove the upper intercooler pipes and make sure the oil level is OK

Bear that in mind.
Have topped oil, and will only try if no other option available 👍

Probably the last post for a little while.
A bit stumped as to my next move with the V8.
Tomorrow I pick up a TD6 with new gearbox, so will take my time with the V8.
But I’m likely to out it as it is, which is a shame for me, but could be a very good proposition for someone else.
