Rangerover gearbox leaking when NSF wheel jacked up

Had the Rangie jacked up for a few days whilst i was looking for a clunk from the front NS suspension (long story) spotted last night that there has been an oil leak which i think is from the gearbox am I right in thinking that this will most likely be the electrical connector seals. Most of the oil has leaked in the area of the drive directly under the drivers seat. Normally doesn't leak.

The connector sleeve is at the rear offside of the transmission so that would certainly make sense.

The running fluid level is around 60mm below the bottom of the sleeve, but once the engine’s turned off & the fluid drains down from the hydraulic galleries and torque converter, plus you’re raising the front LH side of the transmission, I can imagine the connector sleeve becoming submerged.

Presumably, you still have the old sleeve with the red/orange seals, so upgrading to the later sleeve with the black seals should hopefully fix it.

Thank you Phil! Really appreciate your very detailed response and can see exactly what has happened now.....Do you fancy trying to sort out my clunky suspension next Very Happy

I will get a connector ordered and check the fluid whilst i am under there to see how much has been lost.

Remember you need to drop the gearbox sump to change the sleeve. Would be worth getting new fluid at the same time. John

Does this seem too good to be true £150 for a full ZF kit? Most others on line seem to be over £200

Yep, that’s a bargain - assuming the sump pan/filter is a genuine IBS Filtran unit (it says genuine ZF, so it should be).

Parts have all arrived and I have some time next week to crack on and get this done.

Bristol Transmissions were very good and shipped all ZF Parts at what I though was a very reasonable cost.

All I could do with now is a copy of the ZF instruction manual for the filter/fluid change if anyone has it to hand?

Is there not a manual in the ZF kit? My ZF8 kit came with a manual on how to change the oil. Christian.

Note found in ZF gearbox designers pages:

"Ensure the mechatronic is in the most inconvenient position possible, ensuring that replacement of the seal generates hours of cussing, sweat, blood and tears"

Cheers chaps!

Whilst i am in there is it worth replacing these bits (as well as the electrical connector)

I presume the tubes are the same for all of the six speed gearboxes regardless of what they are fitted in?

Yes, the 6HP26/28/32 seals are all the same. You just need to be careful to avoid the equivalent 6HP19/21 seals, as they’re different.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who contributed to this post, I completed this job today following all the instructions and the car feels to shift so much better. Will double check the fluid tomorrow but am pretty sure that the job finished.
