I just bought a 2007 3.6 TDV8 and it has been fitted with 22 inch rims and enormous 285 45 R22 Conti tyres. To these there are also what look like 20mm spacers as well.

Most of the time they are OK but going over speed bumps the back tyres scrape on their outside edges, about an inch in from the outer edge on the wheel arch.

They are unfortunately brand new and dropping another 1200 euros on a new 285 40 R22 set right now seems daft.

So my question is would I be doing any harm to the car leaving them on for a while until they are worn as long as I go easy on the speed bumps?

I'm not sure if anything will improve by removing the spacers.

For the time it takes, I’d try it without the spacers… though of course the tyres might rub on the inside, but you can always put the spacers back and be no worse off. I’m assuming the spacers have been added for aesthetics, I don’t know the max tyre size that fits under.

Plenty of folk have those 22 inch Overfinch style wheels on, so will be able to advise better.

That said, if you want to go back to standard, you may get more now for your 22s with nearly new tyres…. Just a thought….

That's a 32" tyre, I had those on fatty off roader, I didn't have spacers but don't know what offset your wheels are, as has been said you will probably get away with a smaller spacer or none at all... the only issue I had was rear off side arch where the fuel filler pipe goes to the tank, had to heat up the arch and persuade it in an inch or so...

A lot of insurance companies frown on spacers so don't forget to declare the mods....

Remember with tyres that size the speedo will now be under reading... ie, an indicated 70 and you will be going faster... only by a few though.... Pete

285/ 45 / 22 are too tall the speedo will not be accurate unless you use an IID tool to recalibrate the speedo,

If those are authentic overfinch wheels, 22x9.5 ET50, then they should clear without the spacers.
