Harsh gear shift sdv8 autobox

Apologies if this has been covered before, tried searching but nothing relevant.
Twice now in three weeks I have had a what can be best described as a confused gear shift when accelerating out of a roundabout the engine begins to pull around 2000 rpm and bang it upshifts with a hell of a thud and looses all revs and then comes back on line, I have changed the oil and filter last week with a genuine oil and filter, it's done it before and now after the box service, so unsure, if it was a manual it feels and sounds like it's jumping out of gear as the speed was around 30 mph I'm assuming it's second to third, weather it's in third and underload swaps to second then has second thoughts ( no pun intended) and goes back to third or maybe jumping to forth hence loosing revs due to being over geared... ? Anyone else had similar? It happened today 170 miles into a 220 mile trip, faultless upto and after the incident, to the point 30 seconds after I floored it and was into three figures with no issues ... Confused..
TIA
Pat

Mine needed a gear change software update due to occasional thumping on firmer acceleration. The problem seemed to be that the gear wasn't going in soon enough, and when it did come in the revs were that much higher and it thumped through the driveline, occasionally with quite a bang. Apparently it was a known issue and LR had issued instructions to dealers about it with a software update. In my case it was done under warranty.

Your description of symptoms does not match mine exactly, but worth checking if the software update bulletin applies to your car and getting it done if it does. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Ok Cheers, i have the service print out and its all up to date with all campaigns, it may well be my driving style, i have a Disco 4 Commercial as my daily work truck, same box, but you seem to be able to give it some beans out of a roundabout and if you catch the car in front you can ease back a touch on the throttle and then apply a bit more gas and accelerate and it will then change up, I'm wondering if i am feathering the throttle and with this one it see's the throttle angle reducing so instantly cogs up as its got the torque where the V6 kind of is happy with the revs on.. something for me to monitor. SDV8 2015

OK, but for the avoidance of doubt the gearbox software fix I had is not a routine service item, it was just for cars that had exhibited the "shunt on kickdown" issue I had, yours may of course be different, as you say you can monitor it. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Ok thanks for that, it's going in to the main dealer on Tuesday for the rear diff seal to be replaced, I will ask then.
Many thanks for your advice.

It is nothing to do with your driving style, however you drive the gearbox should sort it out and behave well.... Thumbs Up Pete

My scv8 does this too. Hard acceleration, loud bang upon downshift. Feels/sounds like it is under the drivers floorboard. Could be the transfer case. Others have said a fluid exchange may help. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8

As above, see whether it needs the gear change software update, my symptoms were exactly the same as Bora20's. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Update

All sorted, Duckworths gave it a software update, it hangs onto the gear a lot longer in the lower gears and changes now around 2500 rpm instead of 1500 which has made it a whole lot smoother and better on narrow roads as you have better response out of corners rather than up down up down on the shifts.. so thanks to all who have commented,, and the is a cure if others are suffering the symptom.

Cheers

Hi Pat. When it does change in the lower gears, is it nice and smooth now? 2500rpm sounds a bit high to me on a gentle throttle.

Smooth as silk, undetectable other than the rev needle drops, 2500 is a slight overstatement, but around 2200 , it needs a changes just the same as my disco 4, which is 6 months older, so obviously a fuel map issue with the V8 be v6 I suspect, it never seemed like it was cutting the injector's on the upshifts, it was ok if you pinned the throttle but that's because it had gone through the torque band, 1500-1800 was bang on for the most pulling power. Very pleased with it now, so shows things be done if you have a dealership or indi who wants to help.. That said it's not cheap... But shouldn't have a rr if you can't afford the dealership rate, probably why it never got done... I suppose it's one of those things if lr don't think it's a issue it won't go in the update, the just use the phrase, " if the owner experiences" SDV8 2015
