i came accross the mtter on a rr sport website, apparently they said wheels a different desigh, probably tosh, many thanks anyway.

As a former tyre depot manager and sales and marketing manager for Goodyear UK, the only thing I can relate your question to is that radial tyres should always be run on the same side of the vehicle, as the radial belts around the tyre under the tread, will have been run in in the direction relevant to the side of the vehicle they were fitted to.

Tyres fitted to the opposite side of the vehicle that the were originally running on could show signs of tread separation, particularly on high performance vehicles. The same applies to van, bus and truck tyres.

Therefore radial tyres should always be swapped front to rear and vice versa on the same side of the vehicle. This is why many tyre fitters will refuse to fit second hand tyres as there is no history of where the tyre had previously been fitted.

A trained tyre fitter will always mark the location of a tyre / wheel assembly with NSF, NSR, OSF, OSR to ensure that the tyre / wheel assembly is always refitted to the correct side of the vehicle, when for instance changing between summer and winter tyre /wheel sets.

The only caveat being that I held the aforementioned positions in the late 70's early 80's and this was the training relevant to the that time, I am now a little older (70), but have always managed my tyres accordingly. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Current

dis-agree with the wheels/tyres going fronts to back as the landrover service schedule states that during the service wheels/tyres should be changed from one side to the other on the same axle..

As stated Stan,

Those were the rules back in the late 70's early 80's, tyre technology has no doubt changed since then.

You have to however accept that the recommendation you refer to would be misleading IF the vehicle had directional tyres fitted. I am also confident that many of the older fitters. mechanics will swear by the processes they have learnt over many years in preference to what a land rover tech suggests / recommends.

i cant recall a landrover OE tyre being directional ..thats probably why the that procedure in the service schedule is used.

but i agree that directional tyres ,if needed to be moved on the vehicle for whatever reasons, should be axle to axle same side..
