Search for a L322, but now thinking maybe a L405

So, we are looking for a L322, with relatively low miles and for a "realistic" price, but this is becoming a bit of a chore, especially as we would like the Autobiography, which limits choice even more.

So, now thinking of upping our budget and perhaps look at a L405, around the 14/15 plate, again Autobiography. Certainly seems to be more choice with mileages around the 50K mark..


Would be really interested in real world non-bias views of them both.. I know the obviously looks and do see why the L322 looks "better", before it went all curvy. But, as far as ride and interior space. Was the L405 a step up ? Also, the boot on the L405 looks squarer and more practical maybe ? (we will be loading a large dog crate and folding mobility scooter). With not going for a new one, obviously will need to take into account wear and tear and history.

Is there a price/spec list or brochure available for the UK L405 ? around 2014.. I can only seem to find US ones.

Will try and find one local to go look at, but I am sure this place will be the place to get the low down on the 2 of them, must be loads that made the switch --- both ways.

I have owned a 2011 Vogue se 4.4 and now a 2014 Vogue se 4.4. Both models have their own merits but if you drive both I am sure you will go for the L405

Things I have noted

Prefer the heater/seat controls of the L322
Seemed to be more storage/cubby boxes in the L322
Pan roof better on the l405, full roof not just sunroof
Deployable tow bar on L405 is cool, hides completely when not in use
Electric reclining rear seats are a nice touch

But the big thing is the engine, I get between 3 and 5 mpg average more from the L405. I have seen 40+mpg on a long run. I am sure its due to the weight loss and improved aerodynamics on the later car. Also for such a large car it is surprisingly quick Shocked

Need to convince my wife to go see a L405. She really prefers the look of the L322 though..

Definitely drive both before making your decision. I didn't go straight from a L322 to L405 (had a few d4s and other cars between) but the l405 is amazing Thumbs Up Paul

The other thing with an L322 is rust on the cills, the L405 you won't have an issue with. They're both nice cars to drive, I'm probably going to get a load of abuse for this but having had both, I personally prefer the L322 to drive, yes its more boat like but its just got something over the L405.

I’ve never even opened the door on an L405..... but the general consensus on here when this question comes up, is that the L322 is a better Range Rover, but the L405 is a better car.

I prefer the L322 shape, but the “no rust” and about 400kg lighter L405 will quicker, feel more nimble and be more economical.

As others have said, I think you need to drive both, as I’m sure each will feel different....

Both make you feel special when you drive and for me each has been ‘my best ever’ car. All round I prefer the L405, but the cooled seats and the headlights were much better on my L322. The other advantage of the L322 was that the back seat tumbled so you got a flat load space, whereas the L405 only has the seat backs folding, so no flat loadspace.

I was also shopping for a 2011/2012 L322 but after viewing several “mint” cars I gave up and moved to the L405 4.4 Autobiography. The MY16 has the revised suspension (MY15 >), is ULEZ and several other things like auto access height so that ended up being our goal. Not sure when the heated seat controls changed but the ones in the MY16 are much better.

The L322 Towed better IMO probably because of its weight.
We couldn’t fit everything we used to in the boot, we have to fold down one of the seats more often.
I’m not sure the ride quality is that far apart, IMO both were excellent.
The L405 is better if for some reason you decide to push on a little, it handles superb.

Not sure on the storage, our L405 seems to be littered with usable storage. The L322 I found half the storage irritating.

I’d buy another L322 again for sure, is a L405 worth the extra cash I’m not so sure but I couldn’t find a L322 that met my requirements.

Finally I think our L322 felt like a do it all, tough as nails car. I’m sure the L405 is just as capable but mentally I feel the need to baby it everywhere and in every situation.

I've had 3 L322's and am now onto my second L405. I've liked them all, especially the TD6 but I wouldn't buy another L322 over a 405. The 405 is a nicer car to drive, much smoother ride and returns better MPG. If you can find the MY16 in your price range then they have the upgraded suspension - miles better than the earlier models. In an ideal world I’d have both.

I agree the the L322 is more of a classic Range Rover than the L405, but that the later is noticeably more “modern” to drive.

It really depends on your expected mileage and use. If I did low annual mileage and not for business use, I’d be happy with a good condition late L322.

I’m interested to know more about peoples thoughts on the L322 being better at towing. I understand the heavier weight of the 322 will help it be more stable.

Is there anything in particular that makes the 322 better or does it just feel a bit more stable?

Being honest, for me it was a initial reaction towing with the L405 I felt like it was pushing the car around more than normal or at least than I remembered with the L322. But a couple of years later I have either forgotten or just relaxed with the L405 and it tow’s great the 4.4 makes short work of anything. But I’ll never forget that initial reaction! I don’t tow often with it but I have never had that initial feeling since.

Picked the L322 up with 50k on the clock and the L405 had 32k on the clock, loved the L322 and wouldn’t be without the L405 now but I really regretted selling the L322 it was a great do it all car.

I’d also recommend driving lots of L405’s if you can, when I was looking there was quite a few dogs about that needed a bit of love IMO. Even test drove one at our MD that had a few clunks, all be it the sales guy assured us they would be fixed. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
