So, I had a fiddle tonight.
No need to remove anything other than the bottom cowling and the 3 screws holding the AUX inputs. The unit then drops off and just 2 multi-plugs to remove.
Despite trying to trace the tracks on the PCB and a bit of fiddling with a 3.5mm cable with the end cut, I could not figure exactly which cables on the ribbons are used in order to splice into them.

Unfortunately, after a bit of fiddling, the connections inside the 3.5mm jack are now loose and I need to buy a new module - doh!
So, if you don't have RSE, you're in luck. You can unscrew the unit and there's a little ledge to put it on behind the centre of the arm rest. Then it's just a case of drilling a hole and feeding a 3.5mm cable through.
For RSE, an auto electrician may be able to trace the ribbons and splice in but I couldn't fathom it - trying the L and R feeds from the Jack only resulted in mono high range sounds through the car stereo. I think therefore, the solution is to purchase a 3.5mm cable with a 90 degree end. This will allow the dust cover over the AUX inputs to be closed and, feed the cable under and through the centre console, drilling a small hole for it in the arm rest.
