2013 L405 SDV8 Bouncy ride, harsher over bumps

I have a 2013 SDV8 Vogue SE which is noticeably bouncy and not quite as cushioned as I would like over bumps.

The car has done 130,000 miles but has a full main dealer service history up till June 21 when I bought the car. I knew when I bought it that it needed various things fixing and am almost there with fixing all of the issues.

The suspension was the big one and was knocking horribly but that was sorted by replacing the anti roll bar links and anti sway bar. Suspension work to date work is as follows:

The air suspension compressor was replaced 2019
Front lower arms replaced July 2020
Anti roll bar bushes replaced Jan 2021
Anti roll bar links June 2021
July 2021 replaced front arc stabilizer anti sway bar

I thought that the latter would sort everything but the car is bouncy and the suspension doesn't iron out the bumps as well as I would like.

The obvious answer is to replace the struts or at least the front ones but I don't want to do that if its not going to sort the issue. Any ideas gratefully received?

I had the same on my old Sport. Replaced all four strut assemblies and it solved the problem. Kev

Thanks Kev, out of interest what was the mileage on your sport when you changed the struts and why did you change all 4

It was on about 95k at the time.

I replaced the front two because it was bouncy and I also suspected I had a sticky strut because it wasn't lowering to access mode. The new fronts resolved these two issues.

I then replaced the rears in quick succession because I just fancied having new ones all around and thought if they'd been on the car for 10 years/95k miles, that's a decent amount of time and mileage. I didn't necessarily need to, however it did further refine the ride that little bit more than just doing the fronts. Kev

James, I’ve been looking for a 405 to replace my current 322 and test driven four cars, all 4.4 SDV8 versions from model year 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 with a variety of mileages. All had what I’d describe as a slightly choppy and noticeably bouncy sensation to the ride. This is especially in comparison to my 322 which is very stable in comparison.

At first I thought the vehicle I was driving had a fault however all cars displayed this trait. Not something that would put me off buying a 405 but certainly noticeable!

Would certainly be worth driving a couple of 405’s by way of comparison just to ensure you have a benchmark to compare.

My money is on the shocks being worn-out but as a test switch off DSC then see if the ride is improved. With DSC off the shocks are set firmer but if worn-out then there won't be much of an improvement.

Good point - I have had two newer 17/67 reg L405's - one an SDV6 and the other SDV8 but not for six months - I am quite fussy but there is a problem over bumps with the bounce and slightly harsh ride I think. On a flat road the ride is excellent and smooth - I will have a drive of a friends 17 reg SDV8 just to make sure I'm not imagining the problem though.

That's exactly my feeling. Mine was bouncy and choppy since new! The same roads I used with the L322 are way less forgiving with the L405...

Just reporting back - I had the two front struts replaced and the car is totally transformed and now rides like a full fat RR SDV8 should. In fact the ride is now comparable to my previous ff RR's which had 19k and 25k on the clock rather than the 132,000 that this one has covered.
