I've flashed the gearbox ECU using the IID tool this afternoon and the car is now coming out of park which is a big step forward.

Unfortunately, when clearing the fault codes I'm still getting the same plethora of fault codes that I was before.

It's strange that I'm getting a gearshift position fault on the transfer case ECU but not on the transmission ECU.

I think it's been an electrical fault on the car that's caused the gearbox to go into limp mode and stick in one gear, then as I've put it into reverse the grinding and banging noise has been from the gearbox being in 2 gears at the same time.

Back to the drawing board then...

I think I’ve got 2 problems.

The something put the gearbox into limp mode which seems to put it in 2nd gear. When I selected reverse it started grinding.

I’ve been doing some digging this evening with the IID tool.

This is the High/Low Voltage Sensor on our 4.4 TDV8:







The voltage on the 4.4 maintains a steady low voltage when in low range and a steady high voltage in high range with the occasional stutter when switching.

This is the High/Low Voltage Sensor on the SC:



That graph is with the ignition switched on and not touching the High/Low switch.

I’ve tried unplugging the 3 connectors from the transfer box one at a time and that makes no difference at all to the reading. I’ve also tried a new (used) transfer box ECU. So, in a nutshell I need to find where the IID tool gets it’s readings from.

Last night I had the car running and filled the gearbox with gear oil. The dashboard was still lit up like a Christmas tree but the air suspension fault has cleared and the car lifted up nice and quickly.

Once the oil level in the box was set as best as I could I started to have a look a bit closer with the IID tool.

When I drained the oil upon getting the car I got less then 1 litre from the gearbox.

I them removed the valve block and replaced all of the solenoids, the bridge seal and the 4 rubber cylindrical seals as well and when refilling it took 8.5 litres of fluid so there can't have been much left in the box.

I was expecting the oil coming out to be a bit brown but this was black and it smelt burnt which is what leads me to believe something was wrong in the gearbox too.
