The Michelin Pilot are the best tyres I have run for wet handling I use Goodyear as a winter tyre but the Michelins are brilliant in the summer

Ive been looking at tyres also, and preferred to avoid budgets for many reasons. My big requirement (other than safety) is for a quiet tyre.

I need 285/35 R22 tyres, and found on black circles Pirelli P-Zero’s for about £250 fitted. These had ‘A’ performance rating, ‘C’ Economy, but importantly a 68db noise rating… with nothing getting that close!

If I remember correctly, each increase in db is a doubling of volume… so for me, a tyre with 70db rating would be 4 times as noisy!
(Please do correct me if wrong)


I was wrong… 10db is a doubling of volume!!! But still gives an idea of what you get for each db… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

it does depend how and where you measure it, but for most purposes 3db is a doubling of volume.

Right, going to do something about this at the weekend.

On paper the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV and the Pirelli Scorpion Zero seem to be virtually identical. I think the Michelin is slightly better in the wet but this car doesn’t get used in bad weather. Noise ratings they’re both the same which what is important to me.

Are the Michelins worth the extra £50 a tyre over the Pirelli’s which were factory fit?

I’d imagine the new Pirelli’s will be quieter then the 9.5 year old 24k mile Continentals that are being removed anyway.

I usually fit and balance my own tyres but this time it looks like National tyres are cheaper then BlackCircles for the Scorpion Zero’s.

4 Pirelli Scorpion All Seasons with the Noise Cancellation System ordered.

Camskill are the cheapest I could find at £151 a tyre inc VAT at the moment!

Should be here within a day or two. I couldn’t find any of the garages locally that were offering them so looks like I will be fitting and balancing them after all.

Be interesting to see what they’re like.

Just to close this out… Top marks to Camskill on this one!

4 Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Seasons were ordered yesterday at 15:55. They were delivered at 09:15 this morning.

Cheapest place I could find them online and the quickest delivery I’ve seen for tyres in a long while!

These are the LR homologated ones too so more then happy with the choice so far. Proof will be when we fit them at the weekend I guess!

Out of interest, what DOT codes would people accept on new tyres? I remember being a bit miffed when a set of Cross Climates I’d bought turned out to be just over 12 months old. I think you can legally sell tyres up to 5 years old, but I wouldn't be happy if they were over a year old. It's not been much of an issue to me in the past as I do 35k+ miles a year, but I'm going to keep this car to 15k a year so the tyres will last longer. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I had a set of these fitted on Monday. Interestingly the price here was more or less what you paid with Camskill. It was from a company located in Andorra but with depots in France.

I have done a hundred miles with them since Monday. Till then I had 255.55.20 Scorpions which I had bought complete with alloys as take offs.

I decided to revert to 255.50.20 as the 55s are not homologated for the L322 and can be a fail point for the CT {MoT} here. I did manage to get through 2 CTs without them being noticed. Whistle If you buy from a tyre place here they are unlikely to fit them for you.

Be interested to compare your experience with them. I am perhaps being a bit hypersensitive but the ride is slightly harder against the 55s. But not disturbingly so. I am running them at 36psi rear and 33psi front. I cannot say that the foam makes a great deal of difference to road noise although really I have nothing to compare it to as the 55s obviously had a bit more rubber and were not very noisy.

A further reason for going to the 50s was, that as a result of some health issues, I cannot lift heavy weight and the 55 spare is a very tight fit into the spare wheel well. In fact I got stuck once, fortunately at home, and had to ring a mate to get him to come over to bail me out. The wheel was stuck half way out. The 255.50.20 just drop into place.

Don't know if that is of interest to you but, as I said, would be interested to compare experience. John

Thanks John, That’s interesting.

Have you seen the lifting harness that you can get for the spare wheel? It was standard on the early cars and something a lot of people retrofitted to the later cars. We fitted one to our 2012.

It bolts to the rear of the spare wheel well buy the back seats, there’s straps that run under the wheel and a handle that clips over the lower tailgate. When clipped on, if you lower the tailgate the wheel is lifted from the well on the straps and it slides onto the lower tailgate. Definitely a back saver rather then breaker like the wheel is on it’s own!

Yes I have the lifting straps which do make life easier but even with them the 55 did jam that time I mentioned.

Tyres fitted and balanced today. The one advantage of doing them yourself is you can actually clean the wheels properly whilst they’re off the car.

So all 4 wheels scrubbed, decontaminated and then sealed up, 4 new tyres fitted and balanced and then they were all refitted.

I know new tyres are always quieter then old tyres but these new Pirelli’s with the noise control system on them are really quiet.

After a brief run earlier to see what they were like, I don’t know if I’d fit anything else these now.

Quick question, if fitting two new tyres to front wheels should they be put on the back and the half worn ones fitted on front or does that not apply with a FFRR

Best grip should be at the back as any loss of grip there during braking will cause the ABS to kick in earlier and extend braking distances. The rear looses grip first due to the transfer of load to the fronts under braking. Also during cornering if the rears let go first the back end will step out which for the inexperienced (someone not used to handling and practicing skids so it becomes a natural reaction) driver is more of a danger than the fronts letting go.
On the other hand the fronts take more weight and steering load so wear more quickly.
My advice is to not mix new and part worn tyres at all and rotate them to get even wear so this question never arises..... 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
