I have a few problems with my engine, my aim here is to ask for advice surrounding the following information from someone with a better pedigree than myself on this topic.

My vehicle is...
Range Rover Vogue SE L322 4.2 Supercharged 2007
AJV8 Engine
Prins VSI LPG system with auto doser.

I have a P0174 error code (lean bank 2) on my Range Rover.

I have 0.12mm clearances on some of my valves as shown. When minimum clearance is recommended at 0.18mm. Do these have tappets or shims and can they be manually replaced? however at what point do I consider rebuilding the engine.

I also saw issue with chain shown attached whereby it looks as though its hitting inside engine upon cold start only when chain isn't under pressure/tension. As she runs like a dream. However there is a slight misfire upon cold start.

I would really appreciate someone technical reviewing this information and advising on a recommended course of action baring in mind this car is now like "Triggers Broom"...

It has brand new suspension all round.
Brand new disc/pads
Brand new tyres Pirelli P Zeros
Brand new steering rack
Brand new polybush throughout
Rebuilt and upgraded Supercharger
All rust to bodywork now remediated.

Love my car dont wanna get rid but wonder if there is anyway around rebuilding the engine? Advice very much appreciated. Range Rover Vogue SE 2007 L322 4.2 Supercharged 121k. Engine rebuilt @ 120666 Miles

How did you measure the valve clearances? What is the problem with the engine that has made you do this investigation?

Hi Kezbo... i have a misfire and a P0174 lean bank 2 error code. Reasons for these checks is also because I run LPG and wanted to be proactive if I saw any possibility of Valve Seat Recession. I had also just replaced rocker cover gasket so thought it was a good time to check whilst I had rocker off.

I measured the valve clearances using a feeler gauge tool after removing rocker cover. Range Rover Vogue SE 2007 L322 4.2 Supercharged 121k. Engine rebuilt @ 120666 Miles

Does it throw the code on petrol and LPG or just one of them...

Can you measure fuel trims on both..??

Most common reason for that fault is worn out lambda sensors, but you need some more investigation first...

IMHO 0.06mm valve recession sounds normal for an engine that old running LPG... Thumbs Up Pete

Agree with Haylands re valve clearance and wouldn't necessarily jump to fix that to start with. Plus can you be sure of 0.06mm accuracy with a deeper gauge? If that is swarf near the timing chain that would be worth further investigation.

I believe it throws the code on both Petrol and LPG. Buy I will double check that.

Interesting about the Lambda sensors.

I suppose misfire is all thats left but could that be the chain timing causing the misfire maybe.

I have it booked in for a proper diagnostic but great nugget of info on Lambda Sensor, thank you for that 😀.

Maybe redoing the tappets/reshimming is a no brained if chains have to be done, like you say with an engine that's done 115k already. Range Rover Vogue SE 2007 L322 4.2 Supercharged 121k. Engine rebuilt @ 120666 Miles

If it's a missfire you usually get codes, fix the lean problem first and see what happens... Thumbs Up Pete

The bit I've circled in blue, is that where the chain is wearing against the block? Hard to see clearly. If it is, that's not normal and you would need to inspect the chains, guides and tensioners.

Yes, one mechanic had the code but didn't note it down. They say you can feel the engine misfire on cold start especially. Haven't had any misfire codes reappear recently however. But upon cold start engine does wobble a bit and settles when warm. Range Rover Vogue SE 2007 L322 4.2 Supercharged 121k. Engine rebuilt @ 120666 Miles

I think the feeling of a misfire on a very cold start is quite common on the 4.2 SC engine, mine does it and always has since I have owned it. Ive researched it before and concluded its a common thing, known ab oiut with a possible software update fix . Mine runs perfectly after 30 seconds or so and so I have never bothered doing anything about it. Make sure you are chasing an actual problem!

As Kezbo says they take some seconds to run clean...

If you get codes then it could be coil packs or sparkplug failure but no codes and IMHO it's not an issue....

Sort the chain out and take it from there... Thumbs Up Pete

Kezbo: my MOT man describes this as a “7.5 cylinder V8” at start up and mine does the same as yours so I concur with you.

what Spark Plugs have you got in your 4.2 Supercharged ? are they Iridium and designed for LPG usage ?

I changed to NGK LASERLINE IRIDIUM LPG on my BMW 4.4 and it made a big difference

it could be as simple as spark plugs before you go looking at coil packs etc

NB also your spark plugs might need changing anyway after 14 years Smile
