Thank you Jim. I know that forums only tend to show the problems that people are looking to get sorted but it is a bit off putting when spending large sums of money when you read of potential issues. I've read all the L322 threads at least twice so am clued up on what to look for on them but wasn't expecting to even get into L405 ownership so naturally a bit wary.

The 3.0 Diesel engine in the L405 isn’t a gamble. Others might suggest it is.

Thanks PLD. I have read those threads but it seems to point towards a VIN range that are affected. I couldn't find anything about that range and am wondering whether by 2016 the fault in manufacturing had been sorted out.

We had a 4.2SC. Stunning car, nightmare ownership experience because the engine was problematic which betrayed the ‘bullet proof’ 4.2 engine narrative.

as with every car there are failures of a component, some of the 3.0 have a crank problem, but not every 3.0 has the problem, and the number of failures compared to the number of vehicles on the road is low. The 2.7 in the D3/4 was supposed to be prone to crank failures, however I've run mine for 8 years now and the engine still goes round nicely. So I do think some of these problems are blown out of proportion online.

Thank you all very much for the replies and assurance. I don't tow at all regularly (less than annually - even if we do it is less than 1 ton) but do have a 4 hour motorway commute to work every two weeks and quite frankly want to do it in absolute comfort of a FFRR.

No problems with any 3.0L FFRR I've owned. Go for it! All LR cars from 1984

I would urge you to also try an L405 with the SDV8 engine. |

I did 50k miles in one, my Dad has done over 100k miles in a TDV6 Disco 4 with no bother...Like everything else good care and maintenance is generally key to longevity. 2021 L405 Vogue D300

Dropped off my 322 at my local specialist yesterday and they had just received a 15 plate V6 with a dead engine, and a 2.7 D3 - not worth the repair, unfortunately.
