Air suspension Inactive

I have replaced the front offside air bag and strut, Front offside Height sensor, rear offside Height sensor. Reset all height parameters without any issue. Then I get "Air Suspension Inactive" I can clear it and it remains cleared sometimes for 1/2 an hour. Now I can clear it and it can come on again within minutes and without the car moving. When it stays on the height can be controlled IE up to its high setting and down to its low setting. Compressor pressure and temerature all seem to work as you would expect. Pressure settles at 188psi. Car height never varies at any time in use or not.

I have read all the Forum post I can find but none of the solutions given seem to fit my cars symptoms.

The iid unit I have is great as a gadget for re-setting Parameters but for fault finding it leaves a lot to be desired other than telling you the obvious. Air suspension inactive is typical. It tells you what you already know. Great for clearing fault but diagnostics!?

Battery is new Alternator at 14+ volts

Does any body have a list of possible solutions that I could go through? Could it be a relay? If so where is it?

Above link for fuses and relays.

Only other thing that comes to mind is when you dropped the car back to the ground after the work, did you reset the steering angle sensors by going to full left lock, hold, go to full right lock hold and back to centre on the steering. After working on mine, I have had to do this twice on the odd occasion, not just the once, then the suspension inactive fault cleared.

As I work away, sometimes the car does not get used for a long time, when first started I get that same fault message, moving the car back and to, and also resetting the steering angle sensors always clears this.

Second that, take it for a drive, full lock to lock and take it from there...

The IID can only do what the original software engineers programmed the system to do...

As with 90% of fault finding, interpreting fault code meaning is where experience rules... That's why this forum is so useful... Thumbs Up Pete

Hi Martin,

Yes I have done the Lock To Lock. But did not improve it. Must admit I did not do the Hold though. Will do in the mornig and see if hold bit is the secret fix

As in my above post, when I first heard about this reset, it worked, BUT on occasion I have had to do this with holding for a few seconds, and had to repeat the operation a second time, this seemed to do the trick. Not a guarantee, but it did work for me, good luck. Thumbs Up

Merchy and Haylands,

Once again thanks for your help. I have had this problem for over a year and never got it resolved. tried all the suggestion and nothing worked! untill. After I had taken out the Fuse for the Fan problem I did an iiD fault clear. Then did the lock to lock bit. Did the Spectacles. testicles Wallet and Watch ritual, l went out to the shops 20 minute drive and the warning never came on. When I returned the same no " Air suspenion Inactive" warning?

It cannot possible have fixed it, can it? I am going down to the Model engineers Club this morning so I will see if it returns.

I was speakig to an aquaintance in south Wales about the problem and he said that because I had no warning lights on the dash it could only be the exaust valve on the compressor that was causing the fault. Apparently this is unrepairable and the Compressor needs to be replaced.

You can replace the exhaust valve or just drill a hole though it, basically it's a filter for the exhaust...!!

Lots about it if you do a search on here... Thumbs Up Pete

Hi Pete,

warning light came on within 10 minutes yesterday.
Took the compressor out today, Exhaust valve is totally clear. Electric socket to the Compressor is v/good so no fault their.

I have always said. "No matter how bad the problem is if you keep doing it right it will eventually come right". I am now seriously doubting the wisdom in those words. Range Rover Classic 1989

At the moment the only other thing I can think of trying before any more diagnosis would be to start the car on level ground after clearing the fault, then repeatedly go from access / road / off road heights, keep going up and down numerous times, over and over a quick easy check. Just do it when the neighbours are not watching.

Another possible cause I was wondering about were the ABS speed sensors not allowing the suspension to operate
Can't remember where I read that bit, but to me that would probably mean a fault showing on the Gap tool.
Not sure where the unit gets it's car speed message from.
Maybe check they are correctly positioned, sorry if I am barking up the wrong tree, been thinking about it, now running out if ideas, as you say it all works ok. just that damn message. Good luck Thumbs Up

I had an engine fault, fault, on my early one, it came up with an engine fault now and again and there was nothing wrong so there is a precedent for it....

The speed sensor is from the rear passenger side (RHD) ABS sensor, when it fails you lose cruise, HDC ABS and a few more... Pete

I stand corrected, Haylands you definitely know your onions Sir Bow down Thank you for the info, as I regularly read your posts, I may be an engineer, but am still a relative novice when it comes to FFRR's Whistle
