3.6 TDV8 limp mode

Hello all, not been on here for a while as amazingly not had problems that I could not fix. I have a 3.6 59 plate Westminster that goes into limp mode when on slight incline on revs of 2-3000 then you have to re-start to clear the fault. I have read loads of posts on here and other places about cracked manifolds and split pipes but can't see the leak. So far I have been to 2 land rover specialists, 1 in Ashtead Surrey and 1 in Leicester and both have looked over the vehicle but can find nothing wrong. I started by changing the 2 top front hoses, then checked others and cant see any leaks, have put smoke tester on and it does seem like small amount of smoke coming up from behind radiator but when looked underneath just could see where it is coming from, the code it throws up is PO23D I know there are lots of posts on this but really need a reccomendation of where to take it to get it fixed as main dealers just want to change everything at great expense. Should add it lags badly at roundabouts etc but once going accelerates good 2006 3.0 TD6 Vogue Black - sold

That error code indicates problem readings when comparing MAP (intake) pressure and turbo boost pressure. Probably a leak in boosted air pressure side. You have already replaced the two problem hoses, which are the most common cause of this fault. If there is smoke showing from behind the radiator, you probably have an intercooler leak, or perhaps one of the hoses to/from it. I haven’t heard of intercooler being prone to failure on TDV8, but it is quite common on TD6.

Can’t help with someone to replace the intercooler, but any competent garage ought to be able to do that. It shouldn’t be necessary for them to be a LR specialist, but I suppose it may be quicker and cheaper if they have done one before. It is likely to be a lot of work, though, so not very cheap. It’s a case of removing front bumper cover and electric fan. Removing the aircon condenser, which will need the gas to be removed properly. Then removing and replacing the intercooler. Replacing everything else and then refilling the refrigerant in the aircon. Apart from the issues with having to remove and recover the aircon refrigerant, it is a job that could be done with basic tools at home if you were careful and patient. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Hi,

I have had the exact same issue with my 2008 3.6, where the Land Rover main dealer and local garage weren’t able to find a problem.
I was wondering if replacing your intercooler fixed the problem or if it ended up being something else?
I am getting desperate now, as the car has been out of action for a few months now, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers.
