Filling up upside down?!

Hey all, I’ve an odd one here, had this issue since I bought the car last year.
Basically when I fill up, unless I insert and hold the petrol dispenser upside down I cannot get a continuous flow without the annoying click every few seconds, it’s annoying and I get the strangest looks. I’ve tried it at every filling station I’ve been too (and that’s a few as we know!) and it’s not specific to one company, it happens at every one.
Anyone have this or can shed any light on this?
It’s so weird!!!! 2009 (2010 MY) 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography

Think it’s a quirk of the filler neck, used to do this every fill on the old l322, you are not alone lol.

Check inside your filler that the yellow miss fuel has not been tripped? It will trip if it has had a fill from a can spout inserted?

Not quite upside down but l have turned the nozzle upwards over 90 degrees ever since l have had the car, over 10 years.
I just find it works better even if it does look a bit odd. Second nature now. Thumbs Up

If you pull it out slightly you don't have to turn it so far, there is a sweet spot between insertion length and angle.... (ooh err Mrs..!)

I do find my 2012 is much better than my 2002 was so they did something to improve it....! Pete

Well, at least I’m not the only one then! I’ve tried the 90 degrees and no result!
The car does indeed have the yellow reset doobie buried in the boot somewhere I saw, so just to rule it out I’ll give it a try, that’s a good shout, thanks guys 2009 (2010 MY) 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography

watch you don't break your tool, they are brittle.... a long pozi screwdriver works alot better, if you shine a torch down, you'll see if the mechanism has tripped, it's quite obvious when you have light. Thumbs Up

Yep, had the same with mine, and mine hadn't had the misfuel device tripped. As has said before, I think it's just a quirk of the filler neck not venting as well as it should. Bizarrely, once I'd managed to get the tank half full I could shove it all the way in and it was fine..... Phnar phnar.

Never had a problem with any of my petrol fueled cars but the Diseasel fueled S max I had was a PITA to fill up. No amount of twisting the nozzle helped! I guess it was due to the tendency for the diesel to "foam" when exiting the pump nozzle. Previous cars:
S-Max 2007-2013 (only diesel I've had, good car but expensive when diesely bits go wrong, so what's the point?)
Galaxy 2001-2007
Mondeo Estate 1997-2001
Sierra Estate 1993-1997
Uno Turbo 1987 -1993
Fiesta 1984 - 1987
Fiat 127 1982 - 1984
