Auto box holding gears too long.??

I have just completed my first proper 80 mile round trip in BB since the easing of lockdown rules.
It seemed very reluctant to change up gears as I got speed up and even at 70mph was doing 2000rpm until I eased off slightly then it selected a higher gear and was much happier ... I hit my 80mph speed warning doing approx 1400rpm, but at lower speeds still seemed to be in too low a gear.
I know that these 8 speed boxes learn driving habits to some extent, and I am wondering if it has somehow come to think that I only drive to Tesco and back
Has anyone else noticed anything similar??
Next time I get out I am going to manually paddle through the gears and watch it change to make sure it knows 6,7 & 8 exist. and hope it reverts to pre lockdown selections.

They do that when cold to help warm up times, maybe whatever tells it how hot it is is playing up... Pete

Thanks Pete for your thoughts....
I was thinking maybe the selectors have somehow got a bit sticky with oil thickness having not been run up to normal driving temperatures for such a long time.
Paddling through the gears may ease them off ?.

My 2012 WM held on to lower gears once coming down a steepish section of a (paved) hill road, revs way too high (engine then well warmed as had travelled approaching 100 miles). I thought it felt wrong and changed up using the paddles, maybe another three gears. It never did it again, so the cause remains a mystery. Maybe a software glitch that cured itself when the car was switched off and then on again? If it does it again maybe reset the gear change software? That would also put it back to the factory default setting. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I’ve come to the conclusion the 8-speed unit is a very good gearbox...once warmed up. Ours hangs on the gears when cold for far too long IMO and almost feels / sounds like a CVT box. But, once warmed up (after a proper drive) it’s wonderful. I take over and use the paddles when it lets me.

I’ve driven 2 E-class Mercs with they same ‘box and they has similar characteristics - harsher low gear shifts when cold. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

I had done 80 miles , mainly dual carriageway open road, but it didn’t improve by time I got home.
I had been so looking forward to getting back on the road, but it spoiled the trip.
Can a Gap iid reset the gearbox to factory settings ?
It will be a last resort if it can, but I will have to try it if it doesn’t improve over the next couple of weeks.

Not sure re the GAP iid, but dealers can definitely do it, my 405 had a problem (known/common) where on kick down the lower gear did not go in quickly enough, when it did eventually do so the revs were up and it came in with a bang, that was cured by a reboot of the gear change software (under warranty). Only Range Rovers since 1988

Have you had the gearbox oil changed?

Mine was coming upto 80000 miles and it was hanging onto gears.

I changed the oil and filter and it has been spot on since.

The gearbox oil was changed at 60k, now on 77k, so only done 17,000 miles.
It was perfect before being stood in lockdown for 3 months but definitely not happy now.

Mines not as sweet as it was a year ago. It’s only done 70k and I had the oil changed before Christmas.

I have been using the vehicle for work but not any other trips due to the rules etc. The trip to work is only about 6 miles, so it’s had pretty much a year of very short trips. Perhaps they don’t like this to much.

Once the rules change I shall take it for a good run and see if it helps.

I did notice that it reved a lot higher when I had my small trailer on the back, you would think it had a horse box on. Once unplugged it went back to normal so a computer is in charge somewhere!
